- gersonv1800 contributionsSplendid location for an abbey. Huge grounds and nice to wander around. This is a serene abbey in an amazing setting. Worth to go from the main road. Try to avoid the bus loads of guests.... Not everything is accessible, but that make it a more mysterious place. The church is impressive due to its emptiness. Also the forge is cool and gives an historic feeling. The museum is small, but makes sense for this place. We don't do tours by the way. You do not need that for everything.Written May 20, 2024
- df860 contributionsMust visit if in the area.A very nice restored/preserved Abbey. Very interesting to be able to visit the site and contemplate how the community of monks would have lived.Written December 29, 2023
- Gonzalo_de_Berceo0 contributionsImpressive, quiet, inspiring ...What we especially liked about this abbaye is that it shows exactly how the Abbaye de Vauclair (Chamouille) could have looked like in the Middle Ages.Written October 4, 2023
- guideOslo0 contributionsBeautiful abbaye - one favourite for usWhat a place !!! We have been visiting some Cisterciencer monestaries or abbaye /The lastest was the Thoronay in Provence. This place however is by far our best visit. Arriving early means you get the place for yoursself( almost). Then you can enjoy the peace and quietness and it is easy to see the monks walking around under roof discussing etc.etc. The place is surrounded by small hills which seems to "protect" the place. Go there and you will - hopefully- be as pleased as we were.Written August 4, 2022
- Rolf W0 contributionsAn abbey you have to see for yourselfAn abbey you have to see for yourself. Wonderful park in excellent shape. You may enter in several buildings and check out the old architecture, You may spend hours in the ample garden area and walk around freely. Must see place when you stay in Burgundy. Ample parking lots close by.Written May 29, 2022
- Streep470 contributionsBeautiful setting, well worth a visitJust wandering in the grounds was an experience, but the buildings were very old and atmospheric. Well worth a visitWritten May 17, 2022
- Jules0606170 contributionsOf great historical interest, well restoredNot surprisingly for contemplation was the key focus, the Abbaye de Fontenay is rather out of the way at the end of a quiet valley far from the bustle of towns and motorways. It is very important historically as one of the earliest Cistercian abbeys. It is now privately owned by a foundation and has been well restored so as to give a fairly true impression of its former self. The church is still standing and has a number of interesting tombs, the cloister is lovely and the forge interesting.Written May 5, 2022
- publiussulla0 contributionsNice place to soak up a bit of culture and historyThis was a great place to walk around and soak up a bit of history. It is like stepping back into time at this mostly preserved medieval abbey. Beautiful gardens and historic buildings are the main themes here with the handout that was provided by the staff. If you stop here and then go onto Vezelay you get a discount. Nice place to visit and highly recommended for those that like history, culture and a peaceful surrounding.Written April 10, 2022
- Carmen88890 contributionsGreat guided tour, amazing musicThis was one of the highlights of my trip in Burgundy. - Stephen S0 contributionsGREATImmensiely satisfying and tranquil with a feeling of returning back to nature. The grounds were impeccable and the interiors of the buildings really brought home the ancient splendour of the buildings. Well worth a detour...even a visit.Written December 9, 2019
- osimajorusaf0 contributionsAn Outstanding Experience! The Abbey of Fontenay is a former Cistercian abbey located in the commune of Marmagne, near Montbard, in the département of Côte-d'Or in France. The abbaye is located in a beautiful and peaceful setting. Both the exterior and interior are in excellent condition. It was very interesting to learn how the abbaye was so self sufficient. The drive through the surrounding area to reach the abbaye was very enjoyable.Written November 17, 2019
- Schmedley20 contributionsHumbling and beautifulSo beautiful, the buildings and the gardens are wonderful. Would not miss this place. We were there n October and there was only about a dozen or so cars in the parking lot, so it was like being there all by ourselves.Written November 11, 2019
- L3mnes0 contributionsPeaceful lovely surroundingsWe called in here on our way north, and glad we did. This abbey is set in beautiful peaceful countryside . We arrived when it opened at 10am and joined an English speaking tour, which was very informative, and necessary to enjoy the Abbaye to the full.A very well restored and kept venue , privately owned they have done a wonderful job. A must if in the areaWritten October 8, 2019
- nics2180 contributionsAn Abbey with an intriguing history in a peaceful locationThe Abbey has a fascinating history and it is lucky that it was rescued from its industrial use and restored. The peaceful setting belies a sometimes turbulent past. I loved the fact that the buildings haven't been over restored so you can see the very plain environment the monks lived in. Like others I was a bit disappointed when the cafe turned out to be vending machines but this didn't detract from the overall experience.Written September 21, 2019
- Mandara20180 contributionsGo see! What do I need to say more than is already said before. It’s nice, rustic, ancient place and if you are in the neighborhood just visit this place. Entrance fee is 10,00 euro and you get a card with explanation of the area. If you want to lunch, 4.5 km down the road is a place called L’arrosoir it’s small with 10 tables, very local! We went there cause we could not find the Vietnamese restaurant and this is just nearby. They do not speak English but with translate on your phone and hand gestures you will make it. This place is not yet on TripAdvisor. The entree was very delicious and the main course was home made traditional french very tasteful. I prefer a lot of veggies, this was no problem and I got a plate with more veggies! Address 8, route de Dijon 21500 fain les montbardWritten August 15, 2019

The site is exceptional, surrounded by greenery... And nothing! The guided tour is interesting, even indispensable. The rooms are empty and require a great deal of information. Too bad, we can't visit everything... But we will not blame the family that is the property owner of this abbey, considering the rehabilitation it has carried out for our happiness! On the other hand, relatively simple buildings, the cloister disappointed me a little...

Sans aucun doute l’une des plus belle abbaye cistercienne ! L’ensemble des bâtiments et les jardins sont remarquables. Parfaitement restauré et entretenu, le site vaut le détour !
Without doubt one of the most beautiful Cistercian abbeys! All the buildings and gardens are remarkable. Perfectly restored and maintained, the site is well worth a visit.

An absolutely breathtaking site not to be missed.
The serenity that reigns there adds an extra touch to the setting.
Whether it's the exterior or interior of the buildings, or even the gardens, everything is worth the detour.
A very beautiful morning spent with family.

The abbey is an exceptional place to see. However, the guided tour left us wanting more. We would have liked to have (even if they cannot yet be visited) more important information on lifestyles, organization, farms, etc. Considering the price of the visit we expected something else

We enjoyed the site and the children enjoyed the little treasure hunt. It's a shame, however, that we can't see the infirmary and other objects relating to life in the past. Plus the price is a bit high for a family of 5, which is a shame!

A bit out of usual Burgundy circuits, this place is more than worth to do the trip.
Just amazing and more than justified to be classified by UNESCO.

What a beautiful place! It is really pretty and very charming (even on a rainy day to start with). The whole complex is beautiful with the cloisters standing out as particularly nice. Entry was 10€ for an adult which considering the size of the place seems pretty reasonable. The information leaflet provided is good but a tour in English would have been great (they seemed to only do French tours).

On a sunny Wednesday in early June the Abbaye was so quiet, with barely a handful of visitors - this made our self-guided tour very peaceful and relaxing. (The guided tour had just left when we arrived but the brochure in English is adequately informative so there was enough background information.) First impression is of the magnificent honeyed stone buildings set amid formal and informal gardens, a tribute to the restoration works carried out by the Montgolfiers and later the Aynard family who still live there. The abbey is over 1000 years old and was built by Bernard of Clairvaux, an adherent of the most austere form of Cistercian worship. Consequently the church, a wonderful Romanesque building, is very plain inside - a few remains have been gathered together more recently - but this just impresses on the visitor the harshness of the monks’ lives. In the huge first floor dormitory with its 15thC “ship’s hull” wooden roof we found a dead bat and swift, which my wife placed on the floor in front of the altar. The monks’ rooms and cloisters are all superb as is the later forge building where a fascinating replica of a 13thC water-powered hammer has recently been built. The abbey makes for a very pleasant 1-2 hour visit. Note that although a small outbuilding is signed “cafeteria”, this simply contains dispensing machines.
