Went on a multi-hour tow and go kayak tour with Trinity Eco-lodge last summer. Experience was exceptional for several reasons. Of course there is the hope and opportunity to see whales . .. and we did get to follow a couple of humpbacks moving up the coast close enough that we could hear their blows if we listened closely. Just knowing you are sitting close to the water line, essentially in their element, and knowing a whale could be anywhere at anytime is thrilling.
There are no guarantees with whales...but you ARE guaranteed to see beautiful multi-colored cliffs, see stacks and headlands up close; eagles and multiple species of sea birds, the Trinity Lighthouse as you return to the dock. Regardless of where you put in, the paddling will be a real treat.
Captain Bob's gear is very good. The kayaks are the type with rudder so steering is easier. The guide will show you how to work the rudder if this is new to you. You'll be provided with a wetsuit and paddling jacket. I wore hiking shoes and was fine as the guide will push your kayak into the water so you do not have to do a "wet entry". Suggest some long johns instead of pants or sweats for under the wetsuit as that will make it a good bit easier to pull it on. I wore a long sleeve shirt under the paddling jacket and was comfortable on a calm, sunny July day with temps in the high 60s....but remember you are sitting close to very cold water and any bit of breeze can make things much chillier. Suggest a small dry-bag for stuffing extra layer in case. Alternatively, plastic bag should suffice as you'll have a "skirt" which will keep water from getting in the kayak to your stored gear.
If I make it back to Newfoundland, I will definitely make time for more paddling with Trinity Eco-lodge!

We love the 3 hour morning kayak tour. Darryl is a great guide and shares a lot of his sea and NFL knowledge. He took care of his clients and we had a great time paddling.

We went out on a Tow and Go Tour from Trouty to Trinity on the longest day of the year. Guide Daryl was very knowledgeable and had some amusing stories to entertain us before the whales found us. We experienced 3 Minke whales swimming and spouting for about 1/2 an hour. The count was 29 sitings. A couple were a bit too close for me!! It was a beautiful, calm, sunny day and we felt very lucky as we know you can t control the weather, the seas or the whales. We would highly recommend this tour. We felt very safe in the sturdy kayaks and warm in the wetsuit and jackets provided.

Who tows the kayaks? Do guests need their own vehicle and roof rails?

Do they have two-seater kayaks?

yes, they have both single and tandem (2-seater)
What is the level of fitness and boating experience required for this trip. Also, is there an option for an afternoon departure.

yes, I believe afternoon is likely option. We only have 3 scheduled for our paddle. the weather was awful and guide offered to re-schedule us for the next day, so there is likely flexibility depending on participants and bookings. Suggest emailing to confirm.
As to fitness level, we had a very small group and our guide was diligent about keeping the pace relaxed so no one was pushing to keep up. I would suggest you need to be comfortable being on the water for at least 2 hours and making progress most of the time, but at a leisurely pace. Do keep in mind that, although you stay close to shore, you do have to get from point A to B and "shore" is often a rock wall so you can't always readily beach the kayaks if your tire. And a breeze can make paddling more challenging. If you are uncertain, I would suggest the other paddling option around and near Trinity Harbor.
The guide will provide basic paddling instruction. And the Kayaks are very stable. But you are on open water with the potential for some wind-driven swells. If you would find this un-nerving, consider the Harbor paddle instead.
