Even though we had to place our order while signing up, the food was pleasantly tasty. Not a 5 star, but way above the typical fare on one of these ships. We would probably do it again when we are in town again.Written November 18, 2024

Staying on Hilton Head Island for the month, and with neither of us ever having been to Savannah, my husband and I decided this would be the best way to head to the famous historical city. This day trip is exactly as the brochure describes and we were very impressed overall.
It was a Thursday and the boat was absolutely packed — we were fortunate to find a seat, so do make sure you board early. We sat on the left-hand side of the ferry on the top deck heading into Savannah as well as heading back to the island. Most of that which the captain points out along the way to and from Savannah (including dolphins!), are on the port side — so we think we lucked out there! Do make sure you take sunscreen as it can get quite warm/sunny if you’re in the open air seating.
Note the timing of the ferry is to the second, so do make sure you are on board on time! We left at exactly 9AM, arrived in Savannah at exactly 10:45AM, and departed again at exactly 3PM.
We took advantage of the discounted Savannah trolley tickets on board, but note there are other options once you exit the ferry so this isn’t absolutely necessary. Your photo will also be taken upon boarding and they will provide a framed print-out on the return trip. The photos are $12 each and although they were beautifully presented, the photos themselves were not great quality (we didn’t buy ours), though we did notice a few other passengers purchasing them.
One thing we really loved about the ferry trip was that they take a completely different route on the way back to Hilton Head Island. It was through the narrower waterways and around Daufuskie Island — and there was plenty to see. The water was very calm and the captain did a wonderful job of maneuvering past the larger ships.
Lots to see along the way and a wonderful way to get to Savannah for the day. My husband took some fantastic time-lapse videos heading out of Hilton Head Island and they look great! This trip was 100% worth the price paid for the ticket and we wouldn’t hesitate to do it again.

We had a lovely time. Seating is limited in the cabin so get there early if you want to sit inside. The bar is full service which is nice. They also offer soda and coffee. The bathroom on board is clean and nice. The crew was really nice. They take a photo of you when you board and they will have it printed for you. It’s $12 to purchase the photo. You do not have a lot of time in Savannah. We had lunch right away and then did the trolley tour. The trolley fare was $70 for 2 adult tickets and 2 kids. We wanted to shop too so we got off the trolley early. It was a nice day trip.

This was a great and inexpensive way to travel to Savannah from Hilton Head. We enjoyed being on the water and learning more about the area. We sat on the top level (outdoors) on the way there and on the mail level (indoors) on the way back. I recommend sitting on the top level since you can hear the motor(?) on the main floor which is very loud. You should have your choice of seating if you arrive 30 minutes prior to departure.
If you’re considering taking a day trip to Savannah, this is definitely the way to go!

Vagabond did not enforce wearing a mask while inside the cabin. Yes - there is a little sign on each table telling you to do so. But we did not hear an announcement that it was required. As soon as the tables were filled people removed their masks. No windows were able to be opened. Doors were not propped open. We were stuck in an enclosed cabin with 40-50 other people for 90 minutes and only 3 other people were wearing a mask! In addition to that a man stared us down for 90 minutes on the return trip. We had no idea why he had singled us out until, towards the end he starting yelling how it was all a hoax and that we should remove our masks. Highly uncomfortable and the Vagabond crew still did nothing. Vagabond should have been more pro active in enforcing their own policy. Will not return.

We chose the ferry cruise to Savannah from HHI because our resort concierge advised it. However, while the cruise ride itself was nice and relaxing, the ultimate reason we went was to explore Savannah for the day. The ferry is almost 2 hours coming and going. There are tables and chairs, snacks and drinks/spirits while on board to make for a comfortable ride. The crew was friendly and accommodating. The “4 hours” in Savannah include boarding on and off the ferry. So really your hours are cut down to maybe 3 usable hours. It was also suggested that we do the hop-on/hop-off tour bus (which we did), but we literally only had time to ride it around the city once ( without getting off), and grab a VERY rushed bite for lunch before reboarding the ferry. If I had it to do over again, I would definitely drive to Savannah and take my time. There was so much to see and do. Save the money for the ferry, for another water excursion instead.

Never been to Savannah before, so it was a great way to see the city. Loved the trolley tour with Mr. Comedy. The ride to and from was nice and scenic. The boat’s bar was not stocked with much. Quite cold in the morning, and all the inside seating was taken so we sat on the upper deck. Would have been nice to have that hot chocolate! In summary, I would definitely do this again in warmer weather, or arriving earlier to get a lower deck seat in colder weather.

Be early if you want a seat anywhere. They say they have Covid protocol but we were on top of each other with all seating full almost immediately after boarding started. Like other reviews said, you can't understand one word if the few things they said over the loudspeaker system. Riverfront at Savannah is just some touristy restaurants and junk shops. Folks who did the Trolley tour did say they enjoyed that, so do get the tickets ($4 discount) onboard the ferry. Thats the only activity they sold during the ride there. We did see a couple dolphins, and they do have a snack n drink bar open the whole trip. Restroom in down steep narrow stairs and very tight so keep that in mind if you aren't as spry as you used to he. Overall, once you find a place to stand or sit with others a pleasant ride to n from Savannah. But without taking the trolley not much you can walk to or do rom the riverfront during the stop.

This is my second time taking this tour. We had friends with us that never had. It met all of our needs and expectations. The captain and crew were great at serving the passengers. The snack bar was a great advantage. The Hop on Hop Off Trolley experience was great. However, I would advise people to purchase tickets online as they generally offer a discount that Vagabond does not.

Had a wonderful trip from Hilton Head to Savannah. It was our second time taking the Vagabond cruise to Savannah. Trip was great with just the right amount of time to see the sights of Savannah and have a good lunch. Go early if you want a good seat on the boat. You can sign up for a Savannah tour with a discount on the boat or you can be on your own while in Savannah. I would definitely recommend doing this tour. The boat ride is fun and you can see anything from dolphins, alligators and birds on your trip.

If you take this ferry make sure to get there very early. Comfortable seating is limited. We got there 20 min early & were stuck in the hot stuffy lower cabin. No air as advertised. They say “limited capacity” but people are still on top of each other. It was so uncomfortable that we were willing to pay the $70 Uber fair back to Hilton Head.

Could we use this as one-way transportation from HHI to Savannah with 4 bags? If so, what would it cost?
