- Homecroft560 contributionsAmazing experience!Amazing to see wild horses on the loose. Our guide was very knowledgeable and informative. He stopped often to give us details - even knew the horses names. The trip was advertised as two hours, but we actually spent two hours and 40 minutes out. You drive north of Corolla down the beach and through two towns that have sand streets - we went almost to the Virginia border. We didn't see any horses on the beach - stroke of luck if you do - many were grazing through neighborhoods and eating landscaping around homes. We saw 20 horses out of a herd of 219 that are out there. Very amazing place to visit. We saw some other tours out there with Hummers - maybe a plus to ride facing forward vs riding sideways in the back of the truck on padded benches, but we were out way longer than they were and our guide knew where to look whereas the competition didn't appear to be that knowledgeable. We had made our reservation in advance for 9:00 am. We received a text the evening before advising that rain was forecast early in the morning, could we postpone our start time to 11:00 am after the rain was scheduled to end? We replied that would be ok. You need to report to their office - a shack back under a tree - 30 minutes prior to departure.Written November 6, 2023
- SarahE18560 contributionsSo much fun:)The views were amazing! Justin was an absolute blast for a guide!! We can't wait to go back on our next trip!!Written November 6, 2023
- MikeP9780 contributionsGood way to See the Wild HorsesInteresting trip. Driver/guide lived in the area so could impart a lot of knowledge. Windy drive along the beach then a slower exploration of the dunes and areas where the horses were - saw 15 approx.Written October 26, 2023

We went hoping to see wild horses on the beach but was blessed to see horses on the beach at sunset
These Kentucky ladies really enjoyed the tour. Our guide was very friendly and knowledable about the area and the horses. She was very patient and went above and beyond to make sure we saw the wild horses.
We were amazed at the number of houses that were built and being built in such a seculded area.
Thank you Corolla Outback Adventurs for an amazing time and a check off of our bucket list This tour is a must if you are in Corolla NC

Our guide Rick Romano was just the right balance of island laid back artist with a determination to show us a beauty of the not only the horses but the island itself. It was evident from the way the locals greeted him that he was well liked and respected. One of the local neighbors Edna stopped us and when I admired the HUGE shell she had just recovered on the gorgeous beach, she gave it to me! best present on the whole trip & it made it back to Texas with me. Rick is an accomplished artist but really humble ... It took it about 45 min or so to drive from Virginia beach...and its not straight so add extra time for travel. the advenure starts at Knotts Island with a boat ride across to the Corolla. we saw horses before we even landed! Driving around in the 4 wheel drive was fun too! highly recommend the 3pm tour for good lighting for pics. Check out my pictures! and be sure to hit like if you appreciated my review. Tour is listed at 2 hours, but Rick was determined to maximize our time (and the horses where being shy that day)...so we were out there almost 3 hours. We saw the newest baby horse. It was very cool & I'm glad we spent the 50 dollars a person to do this. lEnjoy!

We drove from Virginia Beach-about 55 minutes- and so worth it. Our guide,Rick Romano , was very personable and told us lots of information about the area and horses. We lucked out and saw one of the two foals born in the last two months- made the trip so worth it. Beautiful beaches too. Had a great time and glad we took time to do this side trip.

Our guide was Rick. He was the greatest. He took time to explain a lot of details of the trip.We saw some amazing Mustangs. The ride on the beach was breath taking. We loved the ride on the boat from the marina Mary in the tour office was great. the tour was booked for Tuesday but it rained so we called Mary and she got us on the Thursday trip out. She was so sweet. She even called to tell us we could go earlier then planned but she called our house phone and we did not get the message but she also text one member of our party and we made the early trip. I would do this trip again next time we are in Virginia beach

We felt like we were living in a National Geographic episode about the wild horses. Rick was an excellent tour guide educating us on the behavior and the history of the horses and area. It was truly a delight and are thankful for the picture taking Rick helped us with for our memories. Truly grateful!

Saw about ten horses and were able to get as close as legally possible. Wish we had seen more horses, but hey, that’s Mother Nature for you. The tour is supposed to be two hours; however a flat tire stalled is, but our guide Jay, made up for it. We switched from an open air truck to a van. Since we were in an enclosed vehicle, Jay was more than happy to pull over so we could get pictures. We did the 9am tour and got to the pick up site a little early. Had to call to make sure I was in the right place for the water taxi because there were no signs. Jay assured me we were in the right place. Would highly recommend.

WOW! Let me just start off by saying Rick was the best tour guide ever. Our original date needed to be canceled by the company, but they out did themselves by accommodating us with a new date and time. It couldn't have worked our better. We were able to take pics of wild horses, cottonmouth snake and beautiful scenery. The boat ride was also so much fun. So much to see...to bad the seats weren't on swivels.

Generally disappointed bc we only saw about 9 horses (3 in one site, 3 at another, 2 in the far distance, and 1 outside a house). Not the galloping horses in the surf which we expected. But interesting. Plus we thought we'd be in the open air vehicle advertised, but it was windy and our guide didn't feel well so we drove in a Chevy suburban. NOT as advertised per se, BUT worth it if only for the access it provides to areas otherwise restricted to non residents. They drive you up the beach from the Corolla area to Cordova, in and out of the dunes where you pass by houses that have seemingly been dropped out of the sky. A fun few hours that you would not have otherwise have experienced b/c there is no map or road to follow. Seeing trucks parked on the beach, with their chairs plopped down in sand, with coolers, blankets, it has the look and feel of people tailgating. Dogs off leash...the way the beach was intended to be...Free and Fun. You will not experience this in beaches up northeast bc there are too many people and too many restrictions. Tour is interesting, guide was pleasant, seeing mustangs in wild (thought mostly just grazing) was wonderful. Worth it for the few hours if you have the time.

Rick was a terrific guide and fun to spend the time with. It was only a group of 5 on this tour and I much prefer the smaller tours! Don't miss this!

I will be traveling around Thanksgiving 2019 with my 3 adult children. Do you give tours?
We are four tourists and one of us is disabled. She will be assisted by us when getting in the truck and boat. Do you see any problem with this? She can walk with her walker. Also, how far is it from the Sheraton on Virginia Beach to the water taxi? Is there handicap parking? Thank you, Doris Lim
Hello! I'm planning on booking a tour. I see you have times available for 9am, 12:30pm and 15:30, is this military time? If so lol what time is this 5:30?

I'm sorry I don't have an answer for that question. Our trip was in July. I vaguely remember reading that the tours ended in Oct. Did you try to pull up the website and check the calendar? Best of luck on your travels.
