Overview
Experience Kauai’s sacred Wailua River by land and by water on this combo hiking and kayaking tour that’s easy enough even for beginners. A state-certified guide safely leads you through the trip’s two legs: a kayak trip down the river and a hike through tropical forest to a waterfall. Guide commentary about Wailua’s ancient history and legends along the way adds to the adventure.
Highlights
  • Explore the Wailua River, one of Kauai’s most sacred places
  • Kayak and hike through a tropical landscape for two different perspectives
  • Follow a guide to a remote waterfall for an off-the-grid experience
  • No need to pack lunch, as a delicious picnic is provided
What to Expect
Considered one of the most sacred places on the island of Kauai, the Wailua River winds 20 miles (32 kilometers) through a lush landscape and past the sites of seven ancient temples. Make your way to the river launch point in Kapa’a and climb into a double, sit-on-top kayak. If you've never kayaked before, your certified guide will provide instruction. Learn about the Wailua's history and tropical ecosystem from your guide as you paddle for about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace. Disembark for a 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) hike through the tropical forest, observing native plant and animal species. Stop at a gorgeous waterfall splashing into a natural pool from 200 feet (60 meters) above. Cool off with a swim here if you like, and recharge with a picnic lunch.

Very nice paddle. Short hike to the falls which were amazing. Guide was excellent. He had his hands full with some very novice paddlers. Being more experienced ourselves we kinda helped out the others while he was working with a pair that were really struggling. He ended up

Aloha Len, Seems your guide had a work out. It is never fun to tow someone, but on our tours we never go faster than the slowest members. A slower paddler/hikier often allows us more time to enjoy the passing scenery. As you learned, while it is counter intuitive, sometime paddling down river with the current, can be harder depending what the winds are doing. Thanks for sharing and glad you enjoy our guide. Until our wakes cross. A hui hou,

We had a really good time on this tour. Great variety between the kayaking, hike, and waterfall swim. Do not bring anything you don’t want mud on. Our guide Kamu was great, very knowledgeable and very personable. Hawaiian hospitality at its finest!

Aloha Mike, Kamu is whole lot of fun...but behind all that hilarity is some real keen knowledge of all things Hawaiian. I learn every time I around him. Glad you enjoyed your Wailua River paddle and hike to the falls and that you took time to share and care. Appreciated. A hui hou,

There were four 60+ plus year olds in our group, so you might get the sense from my review that this excursion wore us out. To start, the loading of two 75 pound kayaks on the top of our rented Tahoe, driving across the bridge, and unloading them in the parking lot across the

Aloha Wayne, Great trip report and accurate with some great recommendations! Glad you enjoyed your self guided kayak rental and hike to the waterfall. We are here for folks who want to rent kayaks, as you did; consequently having to car top kayaks back to the launch site on the North side of the river, from our Shop on the South side of the Wailua River. And.... we are here for those who don't want to car top kayaks, and thus go on a guided tour, where we do all the "shlepping" from the convenience of our nearby launching ramp. Either way is a great way to go. And yes....if you choose to go flip flops...you might as well go barefoot. Thanks for sharing. A hui hou,

Nice 40 min or so Kayak followed by 1.5 hr hike in the most incredible setting you could imagine. Be prepared for the mud. And roots and rocks and stream crossings. All fun and all a great time. The falls are terrific and of course you have to go for a swim and get a picture

Aloha John, Thanks for the 5 star review on your recent Wailua River Sacred Falls Tour. Our saying on this tour is "Embrace the mud". Thanks for warning folks about the pitfalls of the trail....but that if one prevails that there is the "carrot".... of the Falls. Since you did not name the guide know that all our guides are top notch and glad you enjoyed the lunch as well. Until our wakes and trail cross...thanks for taking the time. A hui hou,

Aloha Mark, Glad you enjoyed, in spite the required effort, your Wailua River paddle and hike to the Sacred/Secret Falls. I know Kamu to be allot of fun but behind that hilarity Kamu packs allot of knowledges about Kaua'i, its people, culture, fauna and flora. I learn from Kamu every time I spend time with him. Thanks for your "5 star" review...and keep "pushing the envelope" to these beautiful and at hard to get places in this world. A hui hou,
