What to expect
Arrive at the Ferry Building in San Francisco to board a ferry (Monday-Friday) or bus (weekends) to Vallejo. In Vallejo, transfer to a shuttle that will take you to the starting point of the Napa Valley Wine Train. Climb aboard the antique restored train, where you are shown to your seat and poured a welcome glass of wine. Relax and enjoy the views out of the train's large glass windows as it travels north through Yountville, Oakville, and Rutherford on the route to St. Helena. Take a break from the gazing at the scenery to explore the antique train. Visit the kitchen car to watch your gourmet lunch being prepared or stop by the lounge car to enjoy a cocktail or another glass of wine (own expense.) Choose the first or second lunch seating (see Schedule & Pricing below for details.) The menu is seasonal, and features fresh, in-season ingredients (see Itinerary below for a sample menu.) The highly-acclaimed restaurant uses sustainable meat and produce that are locally sourced from within the Napa Valley whenever possible. Hop off the Wine Train in St. Helena in the early evening to board the shuttle for Vallejo, and take the ferry or bus back to San Francisco.

Underwhelmed for the price. Wouldn't recommend.
Oct. 2019
The breakfast provided was a cold croissant, which was hard to eat while crammed on the bus while driving out to the golden gate. Not a big deal but not as described.

The wineries we visited were beautiful and the highlight of the day. After visiting 4 wineries we were dropped off at the market and told we would be boarding the train in 1 hour. Not sure if our bus driver was confused or we were dropped off too early but we ended up having to kill 2.5 hours at the market. I would have rather visited another winery or had the dinner train start earlier. The waiting in between was annoying.

Once on the train everything seemed super rushed. The waiter didn't go over anything on the menu or how the wine pairings work. The staff seemed like chickens running around with their heads cut off. The urgency was very bizarre since the train ride was supposed to be three hours. Within in the first 30 minutes of boarding our train we had been served the appetizer and entree. My husband and I don't eat slowly but we wanted to enjoy the meal since we had paid so much. We soon found out why the staff was so rushed. They wanted us out so they could quick usher us off to another car. I think they must have different dinner shifts and were trying to feed too many groups throughout the ride.

After dinner we were escorted to another part of the train and sat there with poor service for the last 2+ hours of the train ride. To make matters worse, the train was very bright and it was dark out so we couldn't even see the vineyards. I definitely had not thought about this so if I were to go again I would go on a lunch ride instead.

Honestly, I didn't think it was worth the money at all and would never tell anyone to waste their time. If you are thinking about doing this trip be aware it is a fifteen hour ordeal. We were picked up from union square at 8:20 am and didn't back until 11:30 pm.

If I ever did it again I would just take the bus from SF to Napa and do the wine tasting but not the wine train. The wine train was a long ride with poor service and expensive.

Great Train Ride, Yet Disappointed
Sep. 2019
The Ferry ride from San Francisco was very pleasant on a nice vessel. Shuttle van was waiting for us in Vallejo. The train is beautiful and the ride was very enjoyable. Lunch was superb. Disappointed because we thought we would be getting off the train to visit a few wineries. We did not. Didn't learn much about the wineries we passed either. The waiter stood in the back of our car and did a few descriptions, but we weren't able to hear much. My advice is to read the tour information carefully. There are many options and they can get confusing. I didn't feel that our train ride plus lunch for two people was worth the over $500.00 that we paid.

An exotic experience
May 2019 • Couples
Our deal took us on the ferry across the bay to Vallejo, where we had a small luxury coach to ourselves to take us to the Tour centre, which was heaving with people waiting for their tour, from a huge selection of options. The train was a lovely old train, not unlike the Orient Express and lunch was perfectly acceptable - salad and then steak. How much you learn about everything does depend on your waiter and we found ourselves listening to what other people were being told. We took the wine tasting trio of wines for $24 and were very disappointed that each wine was just 4 sips. We would have been better with buying a bottle! We toured Grgich vineyard and then on our return we had coffee and cakes, whilst facing the window and looking at the vines going by as we relaxed. It's a nice idea and worth the experience. it could have been a little more slick and slightly better value.

A long thanksgiving
Nov. 2018 • Couples
Took a train ride for Thanksgiving dinner. Dinner was fantastic at the train ride was about an hour and a half too long. In addition the windows fogged up terribly and you really could not see out anything at night. Dinner service was great. Dessert and coffee service was terrible. Very disorganized and provided very little service and the coffee car. It also rained at night and you had to run about 100 yards off the train to get to cover. Not really fun out well.

We were happy to read your Thanksgiving dinner was fantastic, but sorry to learn you felt the ride was too long. Due to the speed of the train being 15-18 MPH, and the full journey is a 36 mile trip, it does take at least 3 hours to complete the round trip rail experience. We are looking into the fogging of the windows.

Wonderful experience!
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our DELICIOUS gourmet lunch on the Napa Wine Train. Our waitress (for lunch) Teresa was FABULOUS!!
We had second seating lunch. This means we got a extra course of food , a great charcuterie tray with fresh fruit and cheeses. Patty and Victor took excellent caste of during the first half of the train ride.

Lunch to Celebrate 21st Wedding Anniversary
Feb. 2018 • Couples
We booked online from Australia with Ragina. Even had to change our booking date at the last minute due to illness, and this was not an issue. Excellent personal service from all staff when booking in online, checking in at the station and also from our table servers, sommelier and chef staff. The food and wine choices were excellent and so many to choose from. The return transport from the San Francisco Ferry Building and also the bus tour driver pickup both there and back was also very well organised. Whilst not a cheap experience, with our dollar exchange rate, we would still thoroughly recommend this wonderful experience and have already done so to our friends. The Train ride itself is simply amazing and the Napa Valley scenery is absolutely beautiful. Our only complaint is that the day wasn't long enough for us as we would have loved more time on this beautiful old train!!!!! Thankyou Carol Morris and Michael Dowsey. Sydney, Australia.

Full fun day in Napa Valley
Feb. 2018 • Couples
We took the Napa Valley Wine train with lunch. We toured 3 vineyards. St. Supery, Beringers and Raymond. Because we went on Saturday, we had to meet the "bus" at 1 Ferry Terminal. It wasn't a large charter bus, it was more like a small party or shuttle bus. It was nice and clean. The problem was we weren't sure when and if the bus was coming. We were in the correct place, but there was no sign until the driver pulled up and put the sign out. The bus was also late. We were told to get there exactly at 8AM, our driver came at 8:20.

Once we were on the bus, it was a beautiful ride to Napa Valley. The Wine Train boarded us on time. The food was great and we were given a course in between each vineyard. You are seated with other people, but everyone was very friendly.

Each vineyard was different, which was nice. The Beringer Caves are very cool. The tour guides from the Wine Train and at each vineyard were friendly, helpful and fun. It was very entertaining. You not only taste the wine, but they tell you the history of the vineyard, explain how the wine is made and give you some other tidbits of information.

Obviously they want you to buy wine and join their club. We didn't join any of the clubs but we did buy one bottle to drink during our vacation.

Getting back to San Francisco was different. The party bus took us back to the ferry terminal. The ferry ride was about 30 minutes and then we had to make our way back to the hotel again.

I would highly recommend booking this all day tour. But if you only want to go to one vineyard, you may want to take a different tour. There are other small buses that take groups of people to vineyards.Other customers who only went to one vineyard on the wine train had to stay in Napa Valley for several hours waiting for the bus to take our group to the ferry.

Thank you for riding with us Nadj. Sounds like you enjoyed our Quattro Vino tour that visits three different wineries. We also do have journeys that just go to one winery and some journeys that are just dining. We hope you'll check out the other options. I've forwarded your transportation feedback to management. Thank you again for riding with us!
