This was such a great experience. My sister and I decided to take this tour because the company made it very clear what steps they were taking in order to ensure everyone’s safety. Masks were required, we had an app so we could listen tot he tour guide speak and still keep 2 meter distance between each other, plus contrary to the name of the tour nothing was underground or in an enclosed space. So it felt really great to walk around lower Manhattan, learning a part of history many textbooks and teachers won’t tell you, and also enjoying the sun and other people’s company. Stacey, who was our guide and founder of the company, was really fantastic. Knowledgeable, kind, and witty, she made us all feel super relaxed and open towards learning and listening. It was truly a wonderful experience and I’m happy to have taken this tour; I hope I can take another one soon!!

I've done this tour several times with different groups and it's excellent every time. The tour guides know their stuff, and there's always a lot to learn about the city's history that easily goes overlooked. Even with various monuments and historic sites acknowledging our history, it's easy to walk past without stopping to learn.

Our guide, Stacey, was very well informed. My partner is a historian and she even learned a good deal from the tour. Stacey was very engaged and engaging. Throughout the tour, her passion for history became apparent as she alluded to the research she has conducted to further enhance this tour, as well as other tours in development. We are looking forward to taking more tours. On a COVID note, Stacey was very careful of social distancing and everyone was diligent about wearing their masks. When we arrived, Stacey took our temps.

A gem of a tour to understand New York City's Black history and how its enslaved population shaped the city we know nowadays.

Our guide was very knowledgeable and, even on a freezing February day, made our tour engaging and very interesting. Be prepared to walk a bit around the Financial District, although it shouldn't be a problem for most people. Looking forward to taking more of their tours!

I never write reviews but I just had to for Stacey's tour because it was INCREDIBLE. We live in NYC and obviously avoid anything that seems even a little bit touristy but this tour made us see our city in such a different way. I took my kids, who are between the ages of 8 and 14, and it was 90 something degrees on the day of our tour. But my kids remained engaged throughout the two hour tour and we all learned so much.
I had no idea that enslaved people basically built NYC from the time of the Dutch onwards and that there were enslaved people in NYC until 1826 and in NJ until the 1860s (!) and that there was even a city-run slave market downtown in the 1700s. On the flip side, I didn't know that there is a statue in foley square celebrating the African-American experience and that the African Burial Grounds have been preserved and commemorated for all of us to see and know that Black Americans were as much our country's founding fathers and mothers as the Pilgrims and Alexander Hamilton and all the other white men we celebrate in our history books.
Thank you, Stacey!

We went on this tour over a year ago and I still find myself thinking about it on a regular basis. I hope that our tour guide, Damaras Obi, is still there! She did an incredible job presenting all of the information along the tour. We learned an incredible amount and found her style to be very engaging. We have been on several tours of this nature, but this one is the one that sticks with us. I could not recommend any more highly. Side note- I said we went in April 2020 (earliest option provided) but it was actually December 2019. Should not have waited so long!

There is so much history that we never learned in school. Stacy led an incredibly informative tour, starting at Bowling Green and ending at the African Burial Ground. We maintained appropriate distance from other participants, so I felt totally safe throughout. Participants receive a link that permits them to use their phones/headphones to hear the guide. If you're looking for a great outdoor activity, this tour fits the bill!

Totally worth walking in the cold for! Very knowledgeable guide, he also waited an extra 5 minutes for latecomers which was very much appreciated, and he made even the most mundane facts interesting. Lol! Also offered recommendations and assistance with getting around the city once the tour ended. Thanks again!

Our guide told stories about people, slaveholders and abolitionists and enslaved people that were very interesting. This was enhanced by photos.

A number of topics that were talked about, I was familiar with: ie: Description of "Middle Passage" "Passing", and Harriet Tubman. But there were quite a few other individuals, families and groups that I did not know about.

My tour guide, Maya, was a compelling, thoughtful storyteller who really made me learn about social justice and issues of racism in our histories. She was energetic to answer any questions. Thanks for a meaningful tour!
