What to expect
  • Meet you guide at your hotel in New Orleans between 8:30 and 9 a.m. and drive 35 minutes into the countryside to reach Oak Alley Plantation. Step on board a 6 or 9 passenger airboat with graduated stadium-style seating to begin the first part of your tour. Travel through shallow waters at up to 35 miles per hour (56 kilometers per hour), while you learn about the surrounding wildlife from a guide with extensive knowledge about the local ecosystem. Zoom through marsh, swamp, and lake waters en route to alligator habitats where you can see these ancient reptiles up close and learn about their lives. Look up periodically to catch sight of the bird species that also call the area home, including bald eagles, pelicans, ospreys, and owls. At the end of the boat tour, return to shore to tour the 19th-century Oak Alley Plantation, a typical antebellum plantation house. Walk down a classic alley of live oaks hung with Spanish moss on your way to the house, and then meet your docent for a guided tour inside. Afterward, spend a free hour wandering the 25-acre property or eating at the restaurant and café on site (own expense). The tour will conclude when your driver takes you back to your hotel in New Orleans.

Great boat tour
Nov. 2021 • Family
This was a great tour to change the pace from French Quarter visit. The plantation itself is mostly interesting due to the inclusion of slave history there, apparently they are making an effort to include the slave experience there and not glorify the austerity of the few. The best part of the day was the boat tour. Dewy our guide was awesome. He’s from the area and is fun to listen to his stories and point of view. We se a lot of alligators because the small boat can reach areas bigger boats can’t. A lot of fun.

Worth it!
Sep. 2021
This was a great tour! Our favorite part was definitely the airboat ride but the Plantation was also a nice change in scenery. This is an ALL day tour and even though there is a cafe/restaurant at the plantation, there is very little time to sit, order and eat. I recommend to pack a lunch.

Our guide at the airboat was awesome! He is a local native of (unfortunately and so sad) a city near the swamp that got 90% wiped out by Hurricane Ida. I loved how comfortable he felt driving the airboat and being around the gators. It seemed like he knew the swamp like the back of his hand. Just a tip to take sunglasses as the speed of the airboat can really dry out your eyes.

The plantation was also great! bathroom were very clean, the tour of the Big house was very informative and it was neat to see how everyone lived back in the day. Gift shop is quite big and if you have time..grab some ice cream! it was so good!

Small Airboat Tour with Hotel Pickup - A Good Time Was Had by All!!!!!
Jul. 2021
There was no place to write a review of just the Small Airboat Tour. I did not go to Oak Alley. My tour of Laura Plantation was cancelled and LTC graciously changed my reservation to the Small Airboat Tour with Hotel Pickup Up. I was in the Garden District and was picked up promptly and taken to the larger bus to go to the Swamp Tour Dock. If you are considering an airboat tour, this is the company to use. Everyone was courteous and helpful. Having taken both the standard and the airboat tour I highly recommend the airboat tour. The airboat tour is the best of both worlds. You get to go very fast at times and then slowly down the rivers. The driver even took us through the "real swamp". Our guides and driver were very well informed and made the trip just wonderful. I am glad my other tour was cancelled, otherwise I would have missed an awesome experience.

Oak Alley with a story
Mar. 2021 • Couples
This was a beautiful but small property. The big house wasn't as exciting as one would expect. However, Charlotte was outside the slave quarters and the way she shared the information and told the story was incredible and redeemed everything! She is passionate about what she does and it shows! She was so much more than someone telling facts or history! If you go, I hope you're lucky enough to get there when she is there!

Great tour! Everything you need
We had a great time and we learned a lot during this trip. It’s almost and entire day but it’s well worth the while. The plantations have an interesting history.

Fantastic Experience!
Mar. 2020
This was easily one of the highlights of our trip to NOLA! We wavered on which plantation to visit and I am so glad that we chose Oak Alley. The house and grounds are stunning! I worried that it might be less impressive in person, but the pictures just don't do the estate justice. We drove past several plantation houses which looked interesting, but they seemed to lack the magnetism and sheer presence of OA. If you only have time to see one plantation, I highly recommend Oak Alley!

After a leisurely time at the plantation, we drove over to the swamp. The drive is long, as other reviewers mentioned, but it is completely worth it. We paid the extra for the small airboat, which holds up to 6 people, and it was worth every penny; not only because it was insanely fast, but very maneuverable so we were able to see lots of wildlife. We also lucked out and had the best tour-guide. Captain Dewey was absolutely, simply incredible... like the Steve Irwin of the bayou. He was extremely knowledgeable, funny without being over the top, and a total delight. We got to hold Billi (his baby gator) and then after several large gator encounters, we went off-route to go baby gator hunting. Because our airboat was so small, we were able to get into parts of the bayou that the larger airboats couldn't. We had a magical time, and still think about how much we learned. Really, Dewey was amazing!!!

Bottom line, if you have a day to spend while you are in the area, DO THIS TOUR! You won't be sorry!

Great from start to finish!
Mar. 2020
This was one of the highlights of my trip to New Orleans! The tour included round trip transportation, a swamp tour on a small airboat, and a tour of the oak alley plantation.

The company gave a 30 minute window for pick up and they picked me up directly in front of my hotel! They then transferred me to another larger bus. It was all very seamless.

The Swamp Tour was AMAZING. It was fun, interesting and exhilarating. i cannot remember my guides name, but i was on boat called the swamp rat (?). The guide was extremely friendly and I felt safe at all times. We saw a ton of alligators and a lot of turtles and heron. From what the guide says, the small airboat is the way to go because he was able to get in and out of small bayous easily. My boat fit about 10 people. I sat in the back of the boat, but wished i sat in the front row. I honestly would have done this part of the tour again! I loved it!

Oak Alley was beautiful! The mainhouse was beautiful and the oak trees were stunning they made for some amazing photos. The tour inside was a little dull, but had some interesting parts. One thing I thought was odd was that the slave quarters was self guided. I feel like they should have had a guide for this portion.

The tour bus dropped me off on the way home right in front of the hotel. It couldn't have been easier.

i would recommend this tour to anyone who wants a mixture of fun and education.

Great Tour
Nov. 2019
We took the small boat tour with 9 others. Guide was excellent. Hearing protection is provided. Dress according to the weather as it got chilly out on the water in the morning (early November) and we were glad we had layers, hat and sunglasses. Even if you are pre-paid you still check in at the ticket booth. Guide will call out your name once at the dock. This tour is more open marsh and not really the dark, heavily wooded bayou tour that I had envisioned. Small shop where you can get water, Gatorade, snacks and souvenirs.

Oak Alley was beautiful indeed. House tour was only 30 minutes and a bit bland and I felt the group was too large. The reconstructed slave cabins and interpretation was quite good. Nice restaurant onsite and large shop with good books. You do pass other plantations such as Felicity Plantation where The Skeleton Key was filmed.

Closest I'll ever get to Jurassic Park
The small airboat tour was my fave part. Our driver was knowledgeable and really cool and I got to hold a baby alligator from a farm that is to be released into the wild when it's big enough. They're so cute! The bayous and other places he took us were so beautiful and the airboat ride was so fun! The highlight at Oak Alley was definitely the trees. It's amazing how they've grown so wild and big! The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is there seemed to be some hullabaloo and waiting around during the pick up process even before we left NOLA, but our driver was so nice and helpful.

Thank you for the 4 star review. When we have pick ups at different hotel for many guests, we try really hard to make sure that we pick up in the 30 minute window. Street construction, blocked streets, delivery trucks, garbage trucks, and guests not being ready is a problem in the French Quarter. We provide hotel pickups rather than have our guests walk to a central location for a pick up. We try really hard to ensure the pick up process goes as good as possible.
