Highlights
Maximize limited time in Skagway on a shore excursion
Get the inside scoop on Skagway’s Gold Rush history from a guide
A gentle hike that’s suitable for travelers of moderate fitness levels
Enjoy the scenery from both land and water
What to expect
After port pickup in Skagway, your approx. 4-hour shore excursion starts with a pleasant 10-mile (16-km) van ride along the coastline to Chilkoot Trail. Upon arrival at the trailhead, follow your knowledgeable guide into a temperate rainforest. Your active moderate-level hike covers 2 miles (3.2 km) and begins on steep, uneven ground that ascends in elevation about 300 feet (92 meters), before proceeding downhill and then on level terrain for the last mile. Along the way, look for local wildlife and plants, and hear engaging tales about Skagway and the Klondike Gold Rush. The Chilkoot Trail provided the most direct route between the Skagway/Dyea area and the Klondike Gold Fields around Dawson City in the Yukon. During your hike, you’ll be retracing part of the same path that prospectors of long-ago took to get around Skagway's White Pass Trail and arrive at the Yukon River. Then, climb aboard a rubber raft seating maximum 11 passengers and drift along the Taiya River, which flows parallel to the Chilkoot Trail. Your river float takes you through the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Keep your eyes peeled and listen for possible wildlife, including otters, eagles, bears and salmon. (Note: Wildlife sightings though possible are not guaranteed) Wrap up your rafting journey with a riverbank snack. Your Chilkoot tour ends with transport back to Skagway's cruise terminal.

Great hike with a beautiful payoff
Jul. 2019
We signed up for this trip with our adult kids and their spouses, since they are somewhat experienced hikers. We are not hikers, so were a little nervous. Overall, it was a great hike, although at times there was a slope not far away so we had to go slowly and be careful. I recommend bringing a hiking pole, which is offered at the beginning. The first part of the hike was harder, more up and down hills, with the second part more flat - so don't be too worried at first. After working and sweating on a hike, we had the payoff - a beautiful, peaceful, rafting trip on the Taiya River. The river flowed slowly and our tour guide steered us along with paddles. It was an amazing site and we had beautiful weather that day (July, 2019). Becca, our tour guide, was cheerful, informative, and helpful to all of us, regardless of our experience level. Although the hike was somewhat challenging to us non-hikers, we did it, and deserved the payoff of the beautiful float on the river!

DON'T MISS THIS !
Sep. 2019
Owen met us at the dock and we spent the few miles in the van to the trail entrance hearing all about the history of Skagway and surrounding area. We started the hike after a brief safety chat. Owen truly enjoyed his job and was extremely knowledgable about the Gold Rush trail, plants, and wildlife. The excursion included hike that was not too hard but you need to be able to step over and around roots and a great float down the river to the landing where we enjoyed a snack. We saw several Eagles fishing and eating up close. We thought this excursion was the best of any we did at any port. We are in our 60's and would recommend it to anyone any age without mobility issues. Owen did a splended job .

Mother nature everywhere
Nov. 2018
Hike was fantastic. Bring good hiking shoes and waterproof jackets. The boat ride was fun, safe and interesting while seeing all the nature has to offer. If you have joint/knee problems, this will not be for you. There are lots of steep climbing and can be treacherous depending on the weather.

Great hike and float!
Sep. 2019
We enjoyed a wonderful hike and float! Our guide, Becca, was helpful and knowledgeable. She taught us about local plants, history, and animals. She offered snacks and hiking poles before the hike and was excellent at gauging our group's speed and abilities. During the float portion, she handled the raft expertly and helped us to see some bald eagles in nearby trees. At the conclusion of the rafting portion, there were more snacks provided. On the way back to Skagway, Becca recommended other things we could do while we were in town. I would definitely recommend this excursion!

Historic hike and great ride down the river!
Sep. 2019
This historic hike along the Chilkoot Trail was even more wonderful, with Bob our guide giving a lot of historical facts and even information about the trees, flowers, wild berries, mushrooms etc. Float down the river was calming and we saw lots of bald eagles. Bob was a wealth of information, and was very helpful.

Lovely hike with a calming float
Sep. 2019
On our hike: Tasted some Highbush Cranberries , took tons of pictures of mushrooms growing in this lush temperate coastal rainforest. Saw a pair of adult eagles (majestic af) and one teenage one sitting boastfully on a branch. Later on in the float we saw a single eagle take off and soar; our lovely guide Owen, was able to follow the eagle's path and it was so breathtaking that as the bird exited our view everyone just exhaled "whoaaa" simultaneously. It was such a great excursion for a taste of this Chilkoot Trail and a calming float on the Taiya River. Snacks were provided at the end. Owen dropped us off at our location of choice in town and it was a fabulous time.

Rain did not deter us!
Sep. 2019 • Couples
Becca and Ryan helped make a rainy day hike/float excursion the best. The sensory was so beautiful I barely noticed I was wet. And hey, it’s nature, a little rain didn’t distract.
