8 Euro gets you a one hour guided tour (thank you, Fatima) of 700 metres of underground former lava tubes (890,000 years old), then a small exhibit on volcanoes followed by an old-ish film on the creation of Madeira and its islands. The attraction concludes...More

It was really our luck to find a tour to northern part of Madeira ... The caves are the most worthy one ! You go in , you walk for 1 km then they take you to the center of the earth ... the entrance...More

Caves were really not worth seeing. Dated film, and uninteresting presentation followed. Simulated experience to the centre of the earth involved standing in a box which rattled a bit then proceeding to see a room with a lit up structure and some sound effects. The...More

We visited The Caves of Sao Vincente on Thursday 24th November as our ship was docked in Funchal. The actual 700 meter walk through the Lava Tubes was very interesting, the last 30 minutes of the “3” D film was unnecessary and rather boring!!

I took two grandsons, aged 12 and 7 on this tour. The Journey to the Centre of the Earth film was an excellent introduction. They both knew quite a lot about volcanic formations but being able to walk in the tubes and see the lava...More

Didn't quite know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. A guided tour of about 40 mins telling you about the way the lava tubes are formed etc and then a exhibition of more general volcanic items wax good. Suitable for all but the worst...More

Visited as part of a group You firstly go into a room with a screen and are given some film and commentary on the caves history. Afterwards you have a conducted tour through the caves. We were warned about the water dripping from the roof...More
