The Merry Cemetery is a tourist attraction, unique in Europe. The graveyard is famous for its brightly colored, wooden crosses, decorated with popular motifs, naïve drawings representing scenes from the life and occupation of the deceased, as well as written humorous lyrics about life and...More

Inspired by Jack Whitehall's visit to this cemetery with his father Michael (Travels with My Father), I have now crossed this off my bucket list. And I loved it. While most paintings depicted the peoples lives or careers, the depictions of how some locals had...More

Rather than a cemetery, it is a national exhibition of woodcarving and the life stories of the people who lived there. As you go through the tombstones, you read and imagine how people lived when they were alive, each with their own hobbies, good deeds,...More

Extremely original, colourful and merry cemetery. Worth reading (if you can) some of the life stories on the graves.

It's a small cemetery with tombstones that look pretty much the same, only a picture and story are different, but it's, if course, in Romanian. Oh, and the entrance costs money, which is just weird, in my opinion.

This fascinating cemetery was created to rpeserve everyone's story in Romanian language. I met the current woodcarver and painter, Dimitru Pop and visited his work shop. His daughter speaks French and interpreted for me across the street where I visited the local blacksmith Ioan Barani.

This site was created in 1935, for the purpose of following the Dacian (the race of barbarians that are considered the romanian ancestors) belief that death is a phase to the after life of the immortal soul, and hence - a joyful occasion! so all...More

This was highly highly disappointing, for an admission of 5 Lei I really struggle to see what they are doing with this cash. There is no support or guidance given to visitors, just a fairly short shrift from the women in the ticket booth. I...More

You could get by car or you could find connections to take the train from Iasi at least to Sighet-- and then there might be some buses to Sapanta where the Cemetery is

You are supposed to pay 4 RON entry fee, which includes the right to take photos. I can't recommend any accommodation in the village, but it certainly exists.
