As the former slave market, what the hell can you say. It's a pretty park for sure, but when you are aware of the former purpose of the square, it can be pretty sad. When you walk around the streets bordering the square, notice the...More

As a history buff, I knew I had to walk here-- the park was the old slave trade/sales ground and the buildings around it used to hold the slaves... such a sad time and history, but now in modern times the park is lovely and...More

Wonderful Park, quiet, cool breeze, food trucks nearby. Grreat views. Fountain is currently dry as the water pump is in for repairs. Nice stop if your walking around. Find a shady spot and relax with locals.

A walk through the pleasant center of Basseterre has to include the green space of the Independence Square with some beautiful big trees, with a fountain in the middle and benches to sit on. Around it are some attractive Georgian and Victorian houses from the...More

We walked around this square which is bordered by the Roman Catholic Cathedral and a number of older buildings, one of which had been a slave market. A decorative fountain, sadly not working on our visit, is in the middle of the square

I strongly advise to take time to read the signs: they give all the information about the island history. The place is quiet and not much crowded. We enjoyed relaxing on a bench and having a look at the houses.

We had a lovely walk around the square after touring the island before gong back to the ship. Make sure you look for the red telephone box!
