The Zocalo is the heart of the city of Oaxaca and it seems like there's always something going on there. Culture, souvenir shopping, good food, and lots of local flavor.

Lights still hung in the trees, left over from Independence Day celebrations, lit up the night at this festive square. There were street vendors, street performers (singer, Mariachi bands, even a clown) performing every night. The street vendors sold roasted corn, animal shaped balloons, pastries,...More

After many years of repression and suffering in Oaxaca City, I was very pleased this year to find the zocalo recovering nicely. Gone are the grim political protest tents permanently camped smack in the heart of Oaxaca's historical center, and the feel is much lighter...More

Must visit place in Oaxaca, you'll find live music, great shows. A lot of street vendors for souvenirs, some times a bit too much. Also food for everybody.

The heart of Oaxaca with activity and musicians all the time. Yes, the hawkers are there but just say no and smile. Get a shoeshine and feel like a new person or have an ice cream or drink in one of the portals surrounding the...More

The Zocalo in Oaxaca is a nice square, however when we visited it in July it was a bit crowded though. Almost covered in merchandise and merchants, it took some imagination to see the beauty of the ancient architecture.

This used to be a beautiful setting where one could sit and enjoy the shade of the huge trees and the families on weekends. Regrettably it is now nothing but stall after stall of exactly the same things you find in every other market! It...More

Get your entertainment around the clock at the Zócalo, in fact two pedestrian plazas in one. My favorite time is the late afternoon and into the evening: food carts, musicians, vendors of handicrafts, families and tourists strolling. Lovely.

I did not see any that looked directly upon the Zócalo but there are probably a few directly surrounding it!

I was in beautiful Oaxaca the first two weeks of June 2016. At the time the protestors were mainly in the zocalo area, although there were a couple of very large protest marches one block from my hotel. I never felt... More
