I have seen a number of these historical elevators in my travels to Portuguese influenced countries. I guess if you build towns and cities clinging to the sides of steep valleys you need to provide easy means to get people and goods raised and lowered.

Great time to visit and skip long lines. Our wait did not take long and we were going up. Quite a feat that they built the structure. Once up you still need to go up a spiral staircase to get to the viewing platforms which provided some dramatic views of the city and the river.

It’s pretty look at a old structure, being inside a old lift. At the top, the view is great, but I think it’s better by day than by night: you’ll see better the close structures.
