Very impressive old crane powered by two massive wooden hamster style wheels powered by people walking. Used for loading and unloading cargo from ships.

Such an impressive structure. The mediaeval engineers knew what they were doing to make this work with limited technology. Impressive stuff.

The original crane for unloading the cargo from the ships. The treadmills (manned by humans) are still in evidence

The Crane is an impressive site right off of the river. It is an important landmark in Gdansk's history and worth taking a closer look. The story behind the making of the crane is quite interesting.

Make sure you notice this as you walk along the waterfront. There are several historical features in this city and this is not to be missed.

This crane was 20 metres walk from our apartment and is an absolute must if visiting Gdansk. On the edge of the old town and right on the river.

This old crane dominates the riverside at Gdansk, you can see the winding mechanism which was operated by men walking round inside a wooden treadmill. There was no option to explore the interior when we were there so I was a bit disappointed.

Beautiful old crane located in the old town at the waterfront. There is a small poster there that tells you about the origin and purpose.

Sorry if my answer comes too late. As a visitor to Gdansk I imagine you'll be staying in the old town. The crane is located next to one of the old city gates on the riverside so it's very easy to reach on foot. You may be... More
