About
Resembling an imposing castle fortress, this citadel was built in the 1480s by Sultan Qaitbey on the site of the Pharos Lighthouse, to protect the city from the crusaders who used to attack the city by sea.

It is a fort not very old with a mosque inside beside the Mediterranean Sea. It is not possible to enter the arena.

Qaitbey overlooks the Mediterranean Sea, so it's on a beautiful spot. You can wander through this majestic fort, which is relatively empty given the thousands of tourists in Egypt on any given day. It's restful and quiet, therefore completely unlike anything in Egypt.

We just loved touring the citadel. One because it's a castle and it was cool to roam through the rooms. Two because the views are amazing and there is plenty of room. Three because from what I can tell it was close to where the...More
