A huge town square filled with stalls and a myriad of Ecuadorean arts and crafts adits you. Open 9 to 6. Went on a Wednesday afternoon. You can bargain...stayed just one hour . Long enough to find beautiful things, not too long to get overwhelmed.
Great place to go shopping. They have everything even though you don't come on Saturday for the big market. Just make sure you get the right price - the first price they offer is always too expensive ;-)
We couldn't fit a Saturday market visit into our agenda, so \wednesday was second best. Mainly textile vendors wth stalls featuring Alpaca blankets, shawls, hats, and the like. Great atmosphere with indigenous vendors in their native outfits vying for your attention.
I went there for masks -- which aren't a huge thing in Ecuador -- and found 5 vendors. There were even ponchos available.
There is all manner of merchandise here, and, yes, some of it is repeated. If you look like a tourist (i.e., not Ecuadorian), the price will be higher. That's where the fun comes in. Just ask to buy it for less - they can always say, "no," but if it's a reasonable offer, they…
