It’s a hike, nothing special. Pretty views of the volcano and surrounding areas but you can get those from other areas too.

Interesting walk with great views of Arenal Volcano, through forest, and on the lava flow. Information provided on previous eruptions, and wildlife in the area. Good fitness required.

As with many things in Costa Rica, Arenal 1968 Volcano Trails is not well marked as there really is no signage as you pull into the site. So if you are driving yourself, use GPS and look closely for the entrance. Once you find it,...More

We enjoyed hiking the longer of the two trails. It passes over varied terrain and provides good views of Arenal Volcano. Wooden walking poles are provided if required. We saw birds, monkeys, a snake and, my favourite, the leafcutter ants. Remember to take plenty of...More

We stopped here after declining to go to Arenal National Park. Nothing against it but for the price, all we really wanted to do was hike, so this location down the road just seemed more suitable. It was only $16/person and our children were free....More

We went by ourselves, did the 6K route, at our own pace. The route was clearly marked, make sure you get some water before you start, mosquito repellent, a hat or cap. Navigating in the coladas is very interesting how they look; the views from the...More

This is a relatively short hike (options for 2 mile and 4 mile loops). The trails are well-maintained, but definitely need good hiking boots. Both trails go through part of the lava field from the 1968 eruption -- which is visible as a dense range...More

This was a great hike. You can just do the 1968 trail or you can choose to do both. We did both, the other trail is very jungly. Make sure you bring water, rain jacket, some snacks and sturdy shoes - I found some of...More

$15/person (cash only). We took the longer of the two loops on a self guided tour. We’re told it would be about 2.5 hrs but we finished in just over 2 (partly because the rain started and we moved quickly). The initial portion was rainforest...More

Having never done a volcano tour, and with limited research in to which one to do, I didnt know what to expect. Prior to this we did the hanging bridges which i have to confess was better as it was more varied and exciting. I'm...More

This is easy to do, but all major companies (Defasio) will pick you up from your hotel and escort you.

I believe there are no guides locally to pick. We pre arranged a tour with a guide. Although it is easily marked and you can walk by yourself, the guide was a wealth of information and that really made the trail amazing.
