We stopped off here as a couple on a Soweto tour. It was very busy with coaches and large tour groups, we were a bit surprised at how commercialised it was. That said it is an amazing part of the story of SA and Johannesburg so why should the locals not make the most of it.

Loved it all. Bought a fridge magnet and some crafts. I loved the energy and I smile whenever I think of our visit. We went in the week and had space to be and browse. I've heard that weekend energy is fab too. Just go there, it will b a lasting memory.

We found a great easy parking at the corner, 1 block from the main beat. There are lots of vendors and hawkers the closest you get to Tutu and Mandela's houses but the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. Actually the only hustle we found was past the Hector Pietersen museum

There are sooo many hawkers and street sellers. They are not necessarily pushy but the sheer number of them is overwhelming. You have to SEE Vilakazi Street - I'm just not sure I'd recommend spending a whole lot of time there unless you really want souvenirs. The City
