We visited the factory as part of an all island tour. The island is still recovering from Hurricane Ivan, which destroyed over 90% of all nutmeg trees. The detail involved in processing the nutmegs is fascinating!

Small and very very interesting. The smell is amazing. The shop is a must, Nova Scotia has maple syrup well, Grenada has nutmeg syrup to die for. Very educational little tour well worth doing.

We stopped here as a group, part of our Tutti-Frutti day long tour. It's the smells that attract you first, then watching the people/women mostly, hard at work sorting/separating the nutmeg/mace, all done by hand. Spices and cocoa are for sale in the gift shop.

Why is that jar of nutmeg in your grocery store so expensive? The answer lies in a small warehouse on Gouyave's main street. At this, one of the "Island of Spice" nutmeg processing stations, the work is still done by hand as it has been...More

The people, mainly women, working by hand to separate the pulp from the nutmeg and then the thin outer layer of mace from the nutmeg. It takes intensive work to put that nutmeg on our kitchen shelf.

Who knew this was all still done by hand? The sights, smells and info ..... very small tour, takes no time at all and definitely worth the visit!
