A long time item on bucket list. The view from the house is breathtaking. We went on the 9:15 tour with our guide Ellen. She was fantastic. The price and early time are worth it. A humbling experience to see the room and the bed...More
The formal tour is well-organized with timed-ticket entrances and then you’re free to explore the immense grounds on your own. There is scaffolding currently across the entire front of the mansion so photography is a bit challenging. However it is still completely worth a visit....More
The tour guide is the reason for 5 stars. The renovations took a lot away from the experience, but the tour inside made up for that. It has been years since I have been here. I'm really impressed with all that has been added.
We loved this tour. While it’s not free, it’s definitely worth the price of admission. All of the tour guides were so friendly and had lots of info to give. We purchased our tickets the night before and were able to select our tour time....More
I had visited Mt. Vernon many years ago, but thoroughly enjoyed and learned new things during our visit there in September 2019. The Visitors Center has a very good orientation film and some interesting displays. Our timed, small-group, tour of the mansion involved standing in...More
We were very impressed with George Washington's Mount Vernon. The visit started off with a guided tour of the home of George Washington. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and was willing to answer everybody's questions. As you walk around the grounds of the home,...More
I really enjoyed Mount Vernon. We didn't experience any wait times (Monday). We were able to really wander around the grounds and enjoy the beautifully organized vegetable garden, flower garden, house which they have painstakingly preserved as it was when Washington lived there. I had some time before the lecture and visited the restaurant. I had the crab cake sliders, which were delicious, while I discussed Hamilton: An American Musical with the couple to my right and Nationals baseball with the gentlemen to my left.

My family had been looking forward to a trip to DC for years & this was our 1st stop. After riding for quite a while to get there, my elderly parents needed to visit a restroom before touring. It seems a pipe had broken in...More

The tour of the mansion is not a private tour; however it is a timed-tour. You will have to purchase tickets from the box-office for a specific time. The earlier you arrive at the site, the better of a chance to get in at a decent time. The rest of the property and museum is "walk trough at your own pace and it is mainly outdoors!" Well worth the walk around as the grave of Washington is part of the walking outside tour.
Chris below is correct. We bought our tickets on Viator and had the run of the grounds without paying any extra. You should be fine. But the way, our bus ride included tour of Alexandria. Awesome little town full of George... More
