The highest and biggest national park in Portugal. Great views, walking trails, lakes, valleys and winding narrow roads. Much opportunities for traveling by car or bike.

I had been researching this park for a long time, and still couldn’t find enough information about where some of these lakes, trailheads, poco do inferno etc were, and we were rather short on time- we opted to take the N339 from Seia to Covilha,...More

This is a spectacular park - rocky peaks and high cliffs, almost no vegetation except for gorse which covers the mountainsides in yellow in the summer. Huge rocky outcrops - a wild rather inhospitable place really, but definitely worth seeing!

Driving through the park, going from one peak to another, to the valley, one cannot but wonder what is ahead, and yet...wanting to stop and just explore that area some more. The wild flowers were all in bloom, and the temperature dropped from 60 to...More

Only had a day so drove through the park and stopped at scenic spots. Nice view from Torre, the highest peak. There was still some snow. Saw several glacial lakes and the heather growing on the hillsides added colour to the rocky hillsides. With more...More

Even though there was no much snow, we were able to enjoy a little. My little daughter loved playing on the snow. The access to it is very simple. I was coming from Sabugueiro. According to the locals, the best months for snow are FEB,...More

Wonderful gem for lunch or dinner in the Colombo. We had the daily specials of meats and fresh fish. Wonderful paired with local vino. Very reasonable prices.

The national park is very large and in places very beautiful. Unfortunately in many places the woodlands have been destroyed by forest fires. You travel on partly very winding roads and the landscape changes from woodland to barren rock. From burnt down forests to dense...More

We went here twice today. The first time it was very foggy and you could not see the towers too well. However, it was atmospheric and I really enjoyed that mountain top experience. We returned when it was clearer and I was surprised to see...More

There is not enough snow for skiing. There were a few snow patches yesterday overrun with kids. However the views from Manteigas to the Tower are beautiful. Nonetheless, 1 day could be done to visit, but would require you to... More

Sorry I don't know about Public Transport as I was on an organised bus tour but I do know that there are walking trails throughout the National Park and the summit can be reached on foot by road and cable car.
Hi, I read your very nice review of the Serra da Estrela Park. My friends and I are going to Portugal for two weeks in mid-September. I make all the arrangements and choose the places and activities as my friend and I have similar interests and they trust me with the choices. After reading the Lonely Planet guidebook and TripAdvisor reviews, I have decided to spend 6 nights in Manteigas because of its central location to the entire area. We like to explore the local villages and do lots of hiking. My question - does this area worth the 6 days? Also, we are visiting friends in Nazare and spending 4 days exploring the coast. After the Serra Park we are driving back to Lisbon for 3 days. I can change the schedule if I find something worth while. Portugal isn an amazingly beautiful country. Please advise. Thank you, Elena

Hi Elena, I think 6 days in Manteigas is a little too much, nevertheless, it is an amazing place to stay and if you are hiking you need more time to explore. Maybe 3 to 4 days should be a good compromise. Still in Serra da... More
