The rest area was was quiet pleasant area to enjoy the view. It appears that they had cabin for rent but it was not renting season. We were not able to visit the summit because of the "Protectors." They shared much knowledge about why they...More

We were unable to go to Mauna Kea because it was closed , due to protesters. When we drove up, we stopped and spoke to the protesters. They were so welcoming, educated us and even offered us food. They have been camping out there for...More

Incredible place to visit. Where else can you drive to the top of an almost 14k foot mountain?! Would DEFINITELY recommend going with a dedicated tour operator, however, as the road up the mountain is one lane and littered with incredibly sharp rocks. You break...More

Absolute must do on the big island. Went with arnotts lodge. Breathtaking views from the summit with blue skies above and white sheet of clouds below. Defo stay for sunset.

For many years this place was my driving break as I headed across the saddle road. It has nice bathrooms and if you have kids it has a very nice playground with modern equipment. I know there are cabins for rent but we've never stayed...More

Must Go. We arrived about 45 minutes before sunset and walked around. The telescopes are way cool especially when they open up. Then the sun set. OMGeeeee. We simply stared in amazement. This was definitely a highlight moment of our trip. The drive to top...More
