Besides the lusciously covered canyon areas there was a large waterfall the day of my visit which was easily visible from multiple lookouts. Also at the most southern lookout, there was a table setup selling cookies, breads, fruit cups, etc.
Words are hard to come by in describing this beautiful canyon. From the winding road all the way to the top, stopping at each and every lookout in both directions. WOW!
Simply not enough adjectives. Beauty and majesty at literally every turn. Sights and sounds...More
Because it was super cloudy the day we went up to visit it! Windy road up, and definitely chillier up there...but we took a chance and were hoping the clouds would break up but no luck. We've seen it several times before and it's breathtaking....More
This is a beautiful drive to get there and the hike in does not disappoint! Where some smart shoes and bring plenty of water. The views are spectacular and many photo opportunities are available. The water fall area is a popular rest spot and swimming...More
This canyon is worth the drive. There are plenty of look out points along the winding road to the top. I recommend going in a rental car rather than a tour bus, especially if you tend to get motion sickness. The spectacular view from the...More
We visited Waimea Canyon twice during our stay. One visit was to watch birds and hike some of the trails and the other was from above in a helicopter with Safari Tours. Both experiences were amazing. It is a magical place.
Definitely worth a drive to the top, but cannot be faint of heart. Fantastic views, lots of curves & steep drops and hopefully you are not afraid of heights. There are various view stops, so you can catch your breath. Recommend that you dedicate half...More
It is well worth the drive. There many viewing spots along the way. Once you get to the top, it is hit or miss if it is clear. When we first got there it was clouded over so we hiking around, then it started to...More

Plan a half-day for the Canyon. Morning is better before the clouds build up. While on that side of the island stop at the Kauai Coffee Company and pick up some premium coffee to take home. I recommend seeing the all waterfalls on the wet side of the island. Also see the Na Pali Coast on the north side of the island either by foot, air or boat. Chicken in the Barrel is good inexpensive food. Duke's in Lihue has a good evening meal.

You might be able to drive the length of Waimea Canyon Drive and Kokee Drive (it’s one road that changes names along the way) and back (it’s a dead-end so you have to drive back down) with brief stops at a couple of scenic overlooks in 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Better to plan at least half a day. It’s a narrow, winding road with a 4,100’ ascent, so drivers must focus on the road. Passengers can catch glimpses of the Canyon in a few places but you need to pull into the parking lots ($5 covers all lots for one day) and get out of the car to really take in the magnitude and magnificence of the Canyon.
