We drove the Highway on the last day of October in our rental car. It was still open to traffic but most stalls were closed. We drove it easily and there were plenty of places to pull over. That being said, I have been told...More
Been there 3 times. Nice view, specifically if you get there in a nice weather. The trip up there is not too long, but if you don't feel confident about your driving, then don't. The view might be scary for some people
There are many beautiful places on this Earth I know and I have seen few ,and one of them may well be the Transfagarasan . A stunning breath taking place . Something you need to go and see it if you’re loving the mountains and...More

We hired our own car in Bucharest and did the route from the south on our way to Sibiu. Very spectacular, but not scary at all. Most people seem to go to top of pass from Sibiu side and return same way. Very little traffic...More
If you want to get to somewhere using this road then I'm going to stop you right there. Take time to enjoy the views and curvy roads. You will definitely encounter a lot of Dacia drivers on your way who have misplaced their accelerator pedal...More

it's better to go from South to North, I mean from Bucharest to Sibiu, and in October the autumn colors of the forest would be so beautiful; the road would be opened till the end of October for the entire length, including the alpine area from Capra Waterfall (South) to Balea Waterfall (North), passing through the tunnel from Balea Lake
the area covered by Transfagarasan is so relevant from tourist point of view, not only for the road itself, but there are also important places on the road to stop for a while: the Royal Monastery, Curtea de Arges (the Romanian Royal graves are here, and the place born the legend of creation which has a tough cost, Manole the Master, etc)
there is a castle of Vad Tepes, on the top of a hill, than the dam of Vidraru is spectacular (very good point to take pictures), then you have to follow the shore of the lake
the alpine area starts at Capra Waterfall, and till the tunnel you would stop several stops to admire and take photos; the mountains curves go slowly down, to South, but the massiveness of the mountains would impress you for sure
after the tunnel, you would be to Balea Lake, with steep mountains around, like walls, and with Transylvania in front of you, actually to your feet; by the way, this is a good place to eat, too
the road is very spectacular for some kilometers, till Balea Wayerfall, with very close and tough curves
it's hard to decide which part is more spectacular, from South or from North, for both areas you would feel chills on your back, the road would not help you if you could not manage the car, the abyss would be so close to you :)
