The story of the statue lost at sea and the memory of the King it represents is very moving. Tucked into sleepy Kapaau at the North end of the Big Island it is a poignant reminder of the Native Hawaiians.

This statue is the original of King Kamehameha the Great, and before it came here it was lost at sea! How awesome is it that it was found and placed here!

In the period of time around King Kamehameha Day huge amounts of leis get placed around this statue's great neck, then maybe in that case it might be worthwhile to make a special trip to see, but otherwise, not so much.

This statue is displayed prominently in the small town of Kapaau on the premises of the town's civic center. It is quite large and includes some historic information about King Kamehameha. The statue is kind of neat, but equally impressive are the grounds on which it sits. There is a veteran's tribute which lists all the Hawaiian veterans of the... More

Great statue right on the highway in Kapaau. We first found this statue on a previous visit to the Big Island about 10 years ago, and it was nice to stop and visit again last week Great place to stop and walk around, plus it's on the way to the Pololu Valley Lookout. And remember: this is the original statue.... More

The statue is nine foot high gold and bronze. it is sighted at the top of a flight of wooden steps. I found the history of the statue its loss and recovery interesting but even more so learning about the King who it represented. There was something quite moving about the statue being located here in this tiny town of... More

Worth stopping if you are driving by. Good history but nothing you couldn't see online. The town is quaint and people interesting.

Everyone talks about it so you will likely stop and see it. I would not make a special trip to see just this. You can stop and see so many other sites along the way. Therefore not too bad

This is in a very nice town with shops to see and funky places to eat. Definitely worth the drive to see the town and this very powerful statue of the King. Interesting story how it got here.

If one is interested in the history of the islands, this is another must see. (see 11/3/16 review by Brad X for the back story) It's a relatively quick stop, with easy access; in an interesting little town. Its one of those stops, that help make a trip memorable.
