This iconic location deserves a second visit. You actually can walk thru it rather quickly, but next time, I plan to take more pictures. I arrived just before closing, so I'll have to rectify that.

Another castle that we visited today was in Doune. This castle was used In The filming of the Outlander series. We are very much fans of the books and television series. This was one of the lest expensive castles to visit. They have self guided tours with recordings that are very informative. We were amazed at how narrow the doorways... More

I'll start with: I'm a Monty Python Fan. Not only is the castle a nice small venue to explore, the audio guide was hysterical. It was cool to walk around the site and know where some of the movie was filmed. The best part - the gentlemen working at the site, they are funny, and genuinely sweet men wanting you... More

Excellent audio guide available, including specific references to the castle's association with Outlander. Impressed with putting toilets in adjacent cottage, but 2 seems insufficient. Fascinating history and lovely location.

What a fantastic gem to stumble upon when travelling to the Highlands. Was driving through and needed a stop for the dog to stretch her legs. What a great place, two rivers joining together, great location and a great castle, lovely coloured stone work. Free toilets.

This castle was visited on a wet day but this did not spoil our enjoyment. The free audio guide is excellent, narrated by Terry Jones of Monty Python with some extra information about both Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Aldo Outlander. You have to be quite fit as there are narrow spiral stairs and corridors to be negotiated.... More

Doune Castle was used in the Monty Python film Holy Grail, as Castle Leoch in Outlander, and as Winterfell in Game of Thrones. We visited four castles while in Scotland and this was by far our favorite. The audio tour, narrated by Terry Jones of Monty Python and Sam Heughan of Outlander, is very informative and entertaining - and it... More

Doune Castle is a smaller castle than many, but is pretty much intact and well worth a visit. It has a very good audio guide, and since it was used in the making of Monty Python's "Holy Grail" film, the audio guide is enlivened by some incidents from the film. However, be aware that the stairs up the keep are... More

We went there in April and there were some maintenance works, so we didn´t see some parts of the castle. The audio guide is very good and we can lear about the history of Doune Castle by the voice of Monty Python’s Terry Jones or Outlander's Sam Heughan. It's included in Explorer Pass of Historic Environment Scotland. The castle's surroundings... More
