Shimoda town unsettles me. It was eerily quiet and devoid of life at 5pm on a weekday. We chose to do a walk along Perry Road, supposedly the prettiest. It was pretty, a 2 minute stretch of quaint old houses with the iconic black and white tile motif, but not enough for a trip to Shimoda. I regretted wasting my... More

Perry Road is an interesting walk. There are a lot of restaurants and bars around there. Some seem a bit expensive. There are several places of interest including houses built in the traditional "sea cucumber" (namako) style.

These old buildings are along the path Perry took to the Ryosenji Temple where they had some kind of treaty signing ceremony. Along the path is the Hiraname stream and the willow tree lined walkway is of cobble stone. The old buildings are now mostly souvenir and coffee/tea/confection shops. Following this path out toward the harbor takes you to the... More

This was part of bus tour of Shimoda we took. Because it was for Japanese and there was only one sign in English, it would be helpful to get/read up on it before going for the historical significance.

In this very old area of Shimoda is good place to take pics and for couples it's romantic and unique, with little shop and restaurant:)

Much of Shimoda is basic Japanese streets but Perry Road takes you back to a more scenic age. Quaint little houses, bridges over the small river, beautiful flowers and a peaceful aura. We visited here with our son and his Japanese wife taking in the serenity. We stopped for shaved ice, flavoured with fruit syrup and then topped with either... More

This is a nicely built road and has a few shops on both sides. Its a nice walk and gives a feel good factor due to its different environment from the other buildings around the area. The Shimoda flower garden and harbor is nearby Perry road. So you can plan your itinerary accordingly if you are visiting these places too.

A flat quite walk with lots to see. Quant houses and fantastic gardens, just before the hydrangea season. At one end is the memorial for peace between the USA and Japanese.

This historic part of Shimoda is known for its history -- Perry walked it to sign a treaty -- and it's interesting architecture. It is a nice walk. Good restrooms, vending machines, lots of shops and restaurants, and connects to hiking trails. The other way, it connects with the town and a prime tourist stop -- where the treaty was... More

We went through Perry Road toward Shimoda Park. It's not that long, quite picturesque. Little shops to be explored and side lanes that hider other little shops. Shimoda has not that much, so spend some time here.
