This village is a UNESCO site. Very few people still live here in the homes with grass roofs. There is a home that you can pay a few yen to enter to see the silk worms and photos. There are many homes to look at from the outside only. Wear comfortable shoes to walk around in.

First visited a few years ago and absolutely loved it, so decided to revisit it again earlier this year. For those taking public transport, it's a very long journey...but sooo worth it! There are 2 gassho-zukuri villages in Gokayama - Ainokura and Suganuma. Suganuma is a fairly small village with less than 10 houses, Ainokura is slightly bigger and more photogenic. Perched on the side of a mountain, the village of Ainokura is very picturesque. Especially in summer when skies are blue, grass is green and flowers are blooming.
Both times when I went, there were no other foreign tourists and not much of crowd. Minshuku/staying overnight in one of the houses is available here too. I would definitely recommend Gokayama over Shirakawago if you have the time.

Im lucky enough to have friend in the nearby nanto area otherwise I doubt you would ever stumble upon this site. Unesco world heritage listed as a circa 600-700 year old traditional village. As mentioned is still lived in and Im assuming most of the families there now run the little souvenir shops and the like that dot the town. Interesting for photos as you might find a very modern looking vehicle next to a traditional japanese home but once you are past that its pretty amazing. The hills surrounding the area just add ot the enchanting feel. Definately add this to your list if over that way.

In contrast to Shirakawa-go this heritage listed village is small and a gem as there are hardly any tourists there. There is a carpark and one takes a lift or walks down to the village. It is peaceful and in a tranquil setting. Wandering around towards the woods you spy a small shrine. Running water abounds and adds to this relaxing place in the heart of Japan. Both villages do not have any entry fees but one must pay for parking.

Was on business trip to Kanazawa. Very fortunate and extremely thankful to be driven by my Japanese host to the "mountains" for the two- hour drive to a Unesco heritage site. Did not at first know what it was - until the road signs showed the symbol - sloping thatched roofs - then it struck me - those striking steep sloping thatched roofs of old traditional buildings in a winter setting that was often featured in ANA commercial here in Singapore, although that referred to the other more well known site.
impressive traditional buildings well taken care of and most of all, still lived in by residents in rural surroundings. It was the Sport Holiday in Japan so there were quite many local tourists. Walked up to a hilly site to get a bird's eye view of the village - that would be a short trek well worth it as the view iwas quite breathtaking - almost as if like a toy landscape with the traditional old buildings dotting the view you see.
Had my first taste of goheimochi there - savoury sweet grilled rice cake - unforgettable and warming in the cool weather - for someone from the topics - sold by a young girl at one of these houses. It is still a taste that I do miss and hanker for sometimes.

Gokayama is made up of two areas, Suganuma Village and the Gokayama Gassho no Sato. They are quieter than Shirakawago and you don't have to jostle with the crowds; and can take your time to appreciate the place.

This small village about an hour away from Kanazawa, will prove to be a fantastic 1 to 2 hours stay for any visitor interested in discovering a Japanese farming community listed a World Heritage site.
It’s houses are famous for its praying hands shaped roofs.
A local artist’s shop is a great place to learn how rice paper is made and even take part in the preparation of such.
There are a couple of elevated view points which will provide you with great panoramic photos of the whole village.

If one wants to see the Japanese Alps' life in thatched rood houses this is a great place to start. There is a paper making activity, which I did and many small villages to visit; whitch I did one. Set aside the better part of a day to appreciate it.

Welcome to Gokayama. Certainly, Gokayama is simple compared to Shirakawago.
Both Aokura and Suganuma have old-fashioned residences until now.
And people continue to live a normal life.
when I go to abroad, I want to see local people's lives.too.
Not only souvenir shops.
On April 14, 2018, Gokayama of snow became the season of cherry blossoms.
You will be able to see the Shishi Mai dancing(Liondansing) of the spring festival
in and around two weeks.
Please come again Gokayama.
Tanks lot.

Gokayama is really a quiet and hidden gem. There was not a lot of houses as compared to Shirakawa-Go but we truly enjoyed it to be a less tourist sightseeing spots. With some koyo as background, everything looks so peaceful and beautiful.

Although it’s much smaller than Shirakawa-go, it is a very good choice for people who prefer peaceful destinations without the big tourist crowds. Should definitely put on the list if visiting Takayama or Toyama area in winter.

Me and my wife plan to visit Gokayama from Kanazawa in early March this year, 2019 for a day trip.
I'm thinking of renting a car. will it be advisable? Thanks,
Written January 20, 2019
I didn't rent a car, but saw a car rental company at Kanazawa Station. I took the bus from Kanazawa Station to Gokayama, which was very convenient.

For anyone who visited this place around November, may I know what are the dates with peak autumn colors? Thanks in advance.

It is difficult to answer.
Things are about nature.
I think that I will be around November as you said.

Hi. I'm visiting Kaimukura, near to Shirakawa Village on 20th Dec this year. What's the best option of transportation from Takayama City?
Written October 24, 2016
Hi, I was thinking of staying 2 nights in Toyama (coming in from Kanazawa after 2 nights there) and intend for one day to do the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route and the next to Gokoyama. However, there's no information on how I can reach Gokoyama (Suganuma or Ainokura villages) from Toyoma. Can anyone help? Much thanks in advance.
