    Refreshed our souls
We absolutely loved our experience. We happened to get there right before sunset and got stunning photos! I recommend an hour before sunset if you get a chance, so that you have gone for the ferry and walking to the gate. Lots of food stalls too! Famous Hiroshima oysters available but we were too late. Seems like shops close up after sunset, so get there earlier if you want food. We were surprised to see friendly deer that come up to people as well. Our souls really felt refreshed after this glorious experience.

    Beautiful Shrine and Ottore Gate
As you approach the island, everyone moves to the edge of the ferry to get a first glimpse of the ottore gate, which is a spectacular sight, especially for us approaching during a high tide. The main shrine is beautiful. There was a long queue to obtain a shrine stamp for my book, but nobody was queuing at the smaller shrine near the exit so I went there instead. The area is very busy, but some of the side shrines are less busy. There are many shops and restaurants near the shrine too.

    Iconic gate to Itsukushima Shrine!
The Itsukushima Shrine Torii is one of the most photographed features in all of Japan. But the structure itself is quite amazing. The current gate (the ninth) was built over 150 years ago, in 1875, and includes massive camphor logs more than 9 meters in circumference. The entire gate is estimated to weigh some 60 tons. There are many vantage points from which to get great photos, including before the entry to the shrine.

    Great serene place
Declared as World Heritage Site in 1996, this shrine is one of the most revered in Japan. Rebuilt in 1168 in the current style by Taira no Muri. The shrine is known for its floating gate ' Floating Torii', a vermillion coloured gate typical to all Shinto shrines. We visited this during our recent Miyajima island visit. We walked from the ferry to the shrine. Nice walk along the bay of about 20 minutes. The Red wooden long interlinking structure on the backdrop of the 1755ft green Mount Mise, is a place worth it's visit. Serene environment of the building most part of which is on the sea bed and during high tide looks like floating on the sea. Unfortunately during our visit it was low tide. Great place.

    #1 attraction on Miyajima
We visited Miyajima Island during the later afternoon. Arrived by fast ferry offered by the Hiiroshima World Heritage Sea Route. Where we departed from the bridge, near the Atomic Dome site, directly to Miyajima port in 40-45 minutes. After a short waterfront walk, we arrived at the Iconic Itsukushima Shrine Torii Gate. Unfortunately it was low tide and the gate was not floating in the Seto Island Sea. So we walked around the Shrine and crossed the sand for some stunning pics. If you haven't already surmised, it is HUGE! The colour intense. An ICONIC structure! As we didn't arrive by JR Ferry, we did not capture the images from the Sea with the Shrine behind it. Unfortunately we were time pressed Would we return...yes definitely! Miyajima Island was a highlight of our cross county Japan trip.

    Fun and Easy Sightseeing
Loved it, I highly recommend going. It's a great activity to do with the family - my, at the time, 13-month-old, had a blast. During low tide, you can walk out to the Torii gate, during high tide, the shrine gives the feeling almost as if it were floating on the water.

You can't have it all, can you. While Miyajima proved to be as magical and worthwhile as expected, did we unfortunately not get to see the Itsukushima Shrine Torii in its full glory, due to the reconstruction work, that is currently being carried out on one of Japans most famous sites. One can easily imagine the marvel this sight holds, as there are enough pictures available on prospects and the internet, but unfortunately we didn't get to see it. Still absolutely worth the trip!

We came to Miyajima on Saturday, December 28 as a day trip from Fukuoka. We knew full well that the Torii Shrine was under renovation and covered in scaffold but we came anyway. It was a beautiful day.

I don't regret coming here because the island is beautiful. You can still visit the Itsukushima Shrine and Daishoin Temple. Also, don't leave without eating the famous oysters. We tried it at Yakigaki No Hayashi (separate review) and it was AMAZING!

It was definitely disappointing that the Torii Gate was covered in scaffold but it was still very crowded and I still enjoyed Miyajima very much.

The Itsukushima Shrine Torii was under restoration (august 2019)... what a pity, but there's nothing we could do about it. It's an iconic image of Japan and the visit is worth. If you have time, you can enjoy it with the low and high tide, from different angles and lights. I think it's worth spending the night in Miyajima and be able to see the Torii without so many tourists. And the sunset and sunrises are amazing.

As we arrived on the island by ferry the first thing you see is the magnificent red Tori Gate.
When we got here the tide was out so you can walk right up to this amazing wooden icon of Japan.
When you stand beside it the sheer size of it strikes home , made from huge trunks of the camphor tree that apparently last indefinitely.
Later in the day the tide came in and then like the shrine it appears to be floating in the ocean.
When in Japan this is a sight you must experience

The pictures of this massive Torii gate don’t do it justice - when you see it in person the sheer scale of this monument is incredible. Also the view of the gate at high tide vs. low tide is actually quite different - at high tide the gate appears to ‘float’ on the water, whereas at low tide you can walk out to the gate and admire the structure up close.

Therefore, my recommendation is that, given that the time difference between low and high tide is approximately six hours, I suggest scheduling a walk or gondola ride to the top of Mt Misen either side of lunch and then viewing the gate both before and after your walk. In this way, you can get to see the gate at its best at both high and low tide.

As huge 'scafolding structures covered in plastic' go, this was quite unlike anything I have ever seen.

The Camera did not lie.

The 'Great Torri gate', one of Japan's most iconic sites, was very well hidden, at both high and low-tide.

For how long - No clue. we were there in mid-Oct 2019.

Itsukushima Shrine is located on the small island called Itsukushima just off the coast of the Hiroshima Prefecture. The island is more popularly known as Miyajima, which literally means ‘island of worship’. Would need 1 day for the tour. The shrine is located a 10 minute walk from the Miyajima ferry pier. which is close to Hiroshima Station. JR pass will be helpful. High tide has the gate in the water while you can walk to the gate during low tide.

What pops into people's mind when one thinks of the country Japan?
Mt Fuji, Hot Spring, Kimono, the list goes on and on, and I bet a lot of people will think of Japanese Torii Gates, the beautiful architectures commonly found at the entrance of or within a Shinto shrine.

If you like Torii and you are planning to go to Hiroshima, don't ever miss this magnificent Torii in the sea! On the island Miyajima, there is this famous Itsukushima Shrine with an enormous Torii in the sea, and if you stay long enough and time it right, you can approach it when the tide goes out.

It's currently under renovation though
