- Gana59 contributionsVery Distant view and costly parking chargesThe place is very big. You have to walk for a long distance to see the view point. Only the outer chamber can be seen. For the inner chamber, you need to book it in their website well advance which we are not aware of. To come back from the view point to car parking, either you have to walk back the long distance or wait for a long time for their bus service. Parking charges are very highVisited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten October 8, 2023
- Roving044540159691 contributionGreat ExperienceI spent more that a month working as a volunteer in Autoville, and my experience was excellent. A great place to open up your mind, get inspired, and meets lots of interesting people: living there and visitors like me. Always looking forward to come back.Visited January 2023Travelled soloWritten December 28, 2023
- Ria1104Kolkata (Calcutta), India679 contributionsGood for a Relaxing Walk Through the GreeneryIt is best if one stays for a day or two in Auroville. One might not enjoy it much as a day tour spot. I visited the place just for the day and enjoyed the walk through the forests to reach the Matrimandir view point. Honestly, I did not like the view of the Matrimandir that much but I loved the walk. The walk was through the green forest with most of the path having ample shade. They purposely made the path to reach the viewpoint long as that path passed through several of their exhibitions. The return path was shorter and more beautiful. It was a forest trail and had very less people as most people travelled back via the free bus. It feels bad to see that even young people were not able to handle the few kilometres of walk on plain level. After leaving Auroville it is advisable to take the detour and visit some of the cafes of the place a few kilometres away.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 30, 2023
- MikeFoBrighton, United Kingdom1,077 contributionsStrange..not really sure what to make of this place. The Matrimandir is the visual centre of this place. You can only get inside with advanced pre-booking. This place is billed as placed to contemplate etc founded by "The Mother" the colaborator of Auro Sindo (his Ashram is in Pondi). For a place of contemplation there is a huge amount of building and digging (JCBs all around) going on. It does give me the horrible feeling of a cult (a rich one at that), managing to pull in lost souls (mostly western) into its heart. - LolaGo1Washington DC, District of Columbia6,632 contributionsFREE to visit here!Located about 10 kilometers away from downtown Pondicherry, this place is difficult to reach without a car. I hired a taxi driver through my hotel to visit it. The ride is uphill and dusty. There is no entrance fee for this attraction. At the Visitor Center, one looks at the exhibits and watches the related video showing the history of Aurowville. Noted several boutique shops and small restaurants here. It takes about 1.5 kilometers to walk from here to the Vkew Point of Matrimandir.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten March 19, 2024

- Scenic41836943861Jaipur, India12 contributionsAn experience not to missAuroville is a must go if you visit Pondicherry. The main Matri Mandir can be viewed from a viewing point free but to enter you have to book ahead. From visitors centre there is a free shuttle to Matri mandir. Around the Visitors centre there are shops and cafés. We had lunch in the Auroville cafe. Food was good. Chicken mayonnaise salad came with two rotis. Roast chicken had greens French fries and salad and was good. Mushroom tart also came with salad. Small airconditioned space. Shops were a little on the higher side price wise.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten September 25, 2024
- P C6 contributionsThe Abode of PeaceIt is a unique township which has become the abode of people of different nationalities, who embody Sri Aurobindo’s principle of simplicity. I was impressed to find that the township subsists on farm produce and small cottage industries managed by the inmates themselves. A major attraction for me was the gigantic golden dome called Matrimandir. It is basically an area for meditation for the residents. Auroville is must visit to get a feel of human unity at its most beautiful.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten September 26, 2024

Save yourself and your time. This place is NOT WORTH it. Its a long drive from the main Pondicherry city. The famous "Golden globe" thing which you see in picture, you wont be able to see it that properbly. Apparently, you have to 'pre- book' the tickets if you want to see the inside of the temple. We did a mistake of taking the private Ac guided car tour of the place which costed us 600per person. The tour guide is a resident of Auroville. The whole tour was nonsense, they just basically take you around and show you their residence building and community hall n etc. When asked guide,he told dat many foreigners have taken permanent residence here and work here. The whole place was giving a hippie vibe with unlit street and deserted places. God knowns what things goes on there?.
When we requested the car driver to take us to the golden temple, he denied citing private vehicles are not allowed to visit there which i feel should have been told while booking. I mean why will any1 pay 600 pp to see your residence n crap. Avoid this place n instead chill at some cade or beach in Pondi.

We took an auto from Pondy White Town (return gate INR 800 including 2 hour wait) to visit Auroville. Not worth the effort of a visit just to see a building/monument (Matrimandir) from afar. There were a lot of JCB diggers around the Matrimandir so it was dusty at the viewing point. One could not go inside the building, apparently you have to book at least a week in advance - so got the impression that it was open to a privileged few!

There were hundreds of visitors when we were there, many just wandering around looking, or shopping (yes, there is a whole little 'village' of shops selling inexpensive clothing, jams, candles, incense, spices and souvenirs) who I doubt really learned much of Auroville's special history or meaning. But we had pre-arranged a guided tour of two+ hours, and that made all the difference in learning how this little independent part of India came to be, how it is run and managed and how its citizens work together to ensure its continued existence. One might call it a 'religious socialism' where the binding premise is acceptance of all people, all faiths, united for certain commonalities while emphasizing perfection of oneself in ways that benefit not only oneself but all of mankind. A fascinating place to visit intelligently.

Unless you've planned to go to the Matrimandir for the day (and booked a slot in advance) or staying for a short stay there; I didn't see the point of going to Auroville for a few hours to see the structure from far away.
Plus, the location is remote with not many transport options but renting a motorbike or an auto (the price of the latter being overly inflated).
I would advise to spend your time visiting something else in or around Pondicherry.

Went on a Sunday. Took us an hour to commute the final 1-2 kms. If the authorities knew about the crowds, would have expected them to do better traffic management. Sufficient parking space within Auroville but the approach definitely needs tremendous improvement.
The Matrimandir viewing point is a 15 min walk from the parking area. Rs 100 charge for parking but no charge for visiting the Matrimandir. The crowd was crazy! Would definitely suggest to avoid weekends. The viewing point offers a great view of the Temple. You can visit the Temple only if you are staying at Auroville or are associated with them.
There are other things to see in Auroville, but we gave those a miss because of the crowd.
