Rented a car from Nara and did a loop to Mt Yoshino and Muroji dam and temple were part of that loop. Beautiful colors from greens to yellows to oranges to reds to purples to browns. Absolutely worth the 600 yen pp and 500 yen car parking. There's quite a bit to do here as there's plenty of steps and... More

Whether you believe Buddhism or not, I am sure that you love the serenity of this temple. The way to Okunoin Building is a steep slope, but you can feel well-done when you arrive there. Many flowers are in full bloom in April and in May. So, you should not miss this season.

What to say -- this was the highlight of our recent Kyoto / Nara trip. It is difficult to describe the beauty of this forest temple – it is a series of small, 1,300+ year old small wooden halls housing fantastically carved wooden Buddha and other deity images – all of which are now National Treasures of Japan. The main... More

Not much of the foreigners as a visitors in this temple. We stumbled upon it because we were situated close by in Nishimine, one train station further. But what a site... A bus from some small village (a schedule is every 60 minutes so try to be punctual). 750 (or so) steps to the top... Be comfortable in climbing... Too... More

English follows. Luckily I was, I got chance to visit KONDO in special season. In front of many Buddhists, I thought peace of Japan deeply. KONDO was built late 9th century and was kept beautifully. Its style of faith was changed some time in long history, but peoples love Murouji. Japan is most oldest country.

We got off at Muroguchiono and took a taxi (under ¥2000) to the temple as the bus runs only once an hour. Muroji is off the beaten path, so expect a quiet place. The temple itself shows a number of great statues and consists of several halls and a pagoda (apparently the smallest in Japan). What makes the place unique... More

This is one of the most beautiful mountain temples you can ever find in Japan. I have visited this temple three or four times in the past and it never ceased to amaze me with its beautiful temple buildings and the placement of each building in the mountain. The Muro-ji Temple is located deep in Mount Muro of southeastern region... More

I visited Muroji temple in the end of a day, so there were no people and I got the all area for myself (excluding staff and monks). It was a very deep spiritual experience for me, even if I'm not religious... but the atmosphere there is unique. Many interesting buildings, few storey pagoda, all surrounded by old forest. Unforgettable experience.

This old, old temple is famous in Japan as "Women's Koya-san": in the past, many Buddhist sacred places were forbidden for women, but not Muroji. Its ancient wooden buildings seem to look exactly the same as one thousand years ago. The statues looked fantastic, but you have to pay an extra fee to get closer to the most famous of... More

Very beautiful place, try traditional dessert in a restaurant there (I ate sweet noodles with beans, very interesting taste). Huge trees (very impressive), a lot of stairs that lead to an amasing temple on top. Worth the trip!
