Appi is a "bubble era" resort, which means it was purpose built for skiing and is not centred around a traditional village. A huge hotel complex sits at the base, with modern facilities. Lifts are a mixed bag of older style open chairs, covered chairs and gondolas. Lifts are long, as are the runs. The topography ( a volcano) means... More

We were a bit unlucky I think, as a lot of the runs on the mountain were closed due to a lack of snow - I believe a lot of them opened up after we left. The facilities look like they would be amazing if you are staying in one of the main hotels in Appi, e.g. the Hotel Appi... More

Spent a week skiing in wide groomed as well as knee high deep ungroomed snow with hardly any queue at the chairlifts & gondolas on weekdays was pure indulgence. Ski runs were reasonably long and we had the entire 4-5 km runs to ourselves. Snow conditions was pure powder and it fell softly throughout the days of our visit with... More

A great week full of super powder everyday! More fresh snow and less crowd. We've enjoyed skiing in the forest, ungroomed runs (and even groomed runs thanks to non-stop snowing!)

With Niseko, Rusutsu and Shiiga Kogen getting crowded, a great alternative would be Appi. The resort is large enough to spend a good 4 or 5 days here and the best part is that it has none of the crowds seen at bigger resorts. As with most Japanese ski resorts, the snowfall is plentiful and there is terrain for all... More

We took Shinkansen from Tokyo to Morioka in the morning and we got to Morioka by noon and had lunch in the mall in the station. We bought a 14 days JR East Tohoku train ticket (¥20.000 for adult) that we can use in any 5 days anywehere during our stay in Japan and this route was included. Soooo... many... More

It is a little far from Tokyo but worth the effort for a weekend. Still very quiet with few foreign tourists. The runs are unusually long and steep by Japanese standards. Great views of surrounding volcanoes. Hotel is of good quality but overall both it and the resort desperately need some investment

Appi Kogen is an extraordinary powder-snow mountain adventure in Japan's beautiful Iwate Prefecture that I highly recommend to any skier traveling to the Far East. I was fortunate to visit Appi's Grand Hotel via Japan's convenient rail service from Morioka. As a providential coincidence, in the rail car to Appi Kogen, I met Mr. Eiichi Kodama, Japan's premier ski instructor.... More

Appi Kogen Ski Resort was really impressive. Big mountain with a lot of runs for all different level of skiers and snow boarders. Appi performs like a famous major Ski resort without the crazy over crowded lines for the lifts. The ski slopes are well maintained and nicely labeled for ease of navigation. Easy to drive to the ski resort,... More

overall rating: 3 1-/2 stars Appi Kogen was a plenty adequate, comfy base for exploring the area in and around Mt. Hachimantai on a glorious autumn weekend. While the buildings themselves are plain ugly (as in monstrosity), their contents are decent. Service at the front desk, shop, and restaurants was kind and helpful. The western-style room was plenty large and... More
