There are only a few ancient castle left in Japan, and Hikonejo is one of it, it's applying the World heritage now. The amazing castle located in the mountain, with a gorgeous view including the Biwa lake. 僅有不多的日本古城,是任何一個城愛好者遊關西的必去景點,雖不如姬路城般宏偉但以其坐落於山上來說卻帶來另一番體會。

You should arrive here before 8:30 A.M! If you were late arrival, it would take quite long time to enter into the castle!! The hikone castle is one of the famous historic castle due to several reasons. 1. Ii family, one of the most important family in history, were based on this area. Their relatives were in charge of cabinet... More

The castle itself is small...it stands on a stone bed and is one of the few original pieces left. It is surrounded by a beautiful moat. The walk to the castle is along a road and then up some stone steps. The area around it has cherry trees. There is a garden at the back and an elevated area in front... More

Hikone Castle is an original castle, though rather simple in nature, and is regarded as one of the four national heritage castles in Japan. The area is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season

This is a very attractive Castle standing in extensive grounds with a moat outside. Lots of Sakura blossom when we visited! There was quite a long queue to look inside then some steep steps up and down so consider whether you really want to do this. The views weren't really spectacular once you got up there but it was quite... More

We stayed overnight in Hikone so we could explore it properly without being rushed to catch the train back to Kyoto. On hindsight, we could have done it as a day trip, but still it was worth being in Hikone for a couple of nights and really getting into the soul of this little town. The castle is very accessible.... More

Compared to other Japanese castles I have visited, Hikone Castle is most disappointed. There are far from enough illustrations. The Tenshu only has 3 floors? The kind of glass on the top floor makes it impossible to take pictures of scenery. The space inside the Tenshu is mostly used to facilitate the traffic of visitors. The worst about the Tenshu... We stopped by this castle on the way from Chubu international airport to Fukui. It is a very small old castle from Aedo.

Over 700 reviews in English give you a good idea what to expect. Most people point out that there is a lot of climbing to do, and that it lacks modern comfort like airconditioning. My quick reading did not show me the reason for this : Japan has hundreds of castles all scattered throughout the country. Most of them where... More
