Visited this garden in the grounds of the Ryotanji temple after Hikone castle. We weren't sure of what we would find as there were no people around and not many signs but found an old monk weeding another part of the gardens who ushered us...More

This temple feels ancient! The cemetery grounds behind it stretch on forever. It makes me wonder how they got those stones up the steep hillsides! It's quiet and earthy here, everything is bathed in green. The temple itself has many daruma, you can buy one...More

From Kyoto: take the train to Maibara ( 20 minutes by Shinkansen ), then the local to Hikone ( 5 minutes ). Get a map at the Tourist Information. Walk < 30 minutes to Ryotan-ji. Admission 400 yen. TWO beautiful gardens: one dry landscape garden...More
