The museum requires a train ride and then a short (free) trip on a tram to the museum. The art in the museum is mediocre, not world class. The gardens are overdone and the fake waterfall adds a Disney touch. It's a stolid, solid, boring place. The curators could do better, given all the money that obviously undergirds the institution. More art by women would be another plus. Unless you have nothing to do while you're in the area, or haven't much experience with creating or displaying art, save your time and skip this place.

Adachi Museum of Art is more famous for its garden than the paintings on display. If you go on a nice day, the view is spectacular. There is also a cafe surrounding the garden, which is popular and makes a great place to take a break. There is a free shuttle bus from Yasugi Station, so it is a good idea to use that.

Very beautiful museum, obviously the gardens are something splendid... And the possibility of admiring these gardens from the internal path of the museum just as if they were living paintings I think is original and spectacular. A visit during the week with few people is better. There is an internal bistro with windows overlooking the pond: very charming and not too expensive.

I haven't read the other reviews, but this was one of my favorite excursions on a recent tour of Japan. Although you cannot go into the gardens, you get to admire them from afar through large windows in the Adachi Museum. It was truly a calming experience. There were also artworks in the museum, but these weren't any competition for what could be viewed from the windows. Also had a nice gift shop.

A place to relax.
The Japanese paintings by Taikan Yokoyama were very beautiful.
The chilled Izumo zenzai and sasamaki that we ate at the coffee room Taikan were delicious. The poppy outside was very nice to see the nishikigoi swimming gracefully on the second table from the back with a view of the pond outside.
After all, weekdays are fine.
From now on, I want to come and see the snowscape in winter.
Access
There is a shuttle bus to Yasuki Station.
A 40-minute taxi ride from Tamatsukuri Onsen costs about 12,000 yen. Advance Reservation required.

Walked around the Adachi museum with its impressive Japanese garden. Took a lot of great pictures. Very bright Japanese art with small details such as hair, fur and feathers.
Went outside pg close to the garden uddn to tread it. In the small lake, were large carp.

I visited with the aim of seeing the Japanese garden, Yokoyama Taikan, and Rosanjin's three-piece set. I had completely forgotten that there was a destination like this in this area, where the only thing I could think of was mud scooping.
Taikan's collection had textbook masterpieces such as ``Muga'' and ``Autumn Leaves'' on display, but of course not all of the items in the collection were on display. Even more than that, I couldn't help but be amazed at how beautiful the garden was, including the borrowed scenery.

I arrived 5 minutes before opening time and was able to get in right away without lining up.
Although it was a rain garden, the light from the stones made it a spectacular sight.
There are also two cafes where you can enjoy the view and relax.

I travelled to the Adachi museum from Matsue city centre using the JR rail which was easy to navigate as the station names are clearly marked and in English. At the station I pretty much got onto the free shuttle bus on arrival. A short ride is all it takes to get to the museum. Once there proceed through the reception area and head along the route which is clearly signposted and will lead you through the entire museum, the best vantage spots for the garden and also the collection of art housed by the museum.
I would have given this attraction a higher score as the garden is 11/10 but the fact that only the titles of the artwork is in English and the explanation and history of the artists is only in Japanese brought the score down. Considering that this is an internationally reknown attraction, is clearly very well looked after and well planned I find this strange.
Another thing.... if you intend to catch the free shuttle back then make sure you take a card which can be found at reception, for the time you intend to return. I did not know this until I saw everyone else getting onto the bus having them. I ran back and got one. Fortunately it was not a busy time and I managed to get a seat, perhaps at another time I would not have been so lucky. I guess the little speech the driver gave before dropping us off informed passengers of this, but again, these instructions were only given in Japanese.
Be sure to visit the Adachi Museum the garden is really spectacular. I am not a huge fan of Japanese painting but the collection is considerable, I also understand it is notable, so if youre into Japanese art then you are bound to be satisfied here too.

I can not understand how anyone could rate this less than 5 stars. Although, It is very tough to get to when compared to the main sites on a regular tour of Japan. It took us 2.5 hours of train travel--both ways--plus 20 min shuttle, plus wait times to pay the most expensive garden entry fee in all of Japan (even at the current half price rate for foreigners), but I would have paid twice as much and spent days getting to it. It was without a doubt the best garden I have ever seen.
We were the only Gaijin I saw all day and the place was rather crowded which might be avoided if went at opening because everyone there seemed to be on a tour bus.
Apparently, there are 7 gardeners working 14 hours a day 6 or 7 days a week on this garden and all of the staff (waitresses, ticket takers, etc) meet in the morning--every morning--before opening to help prepare the garden, but it looks like they would need a staff of 100s to keep it looking like it does...
If you have any desire to see Japanese Gardens then this is a must see.

How can I get there from the port in Sakaiminato here our cruise ship docks? If I get a taxi how much will it cost and will I have trouble getting a taxi back to the ship?
Thanks

Where is this in relationship to Kyoto? How do I get there?
Written April 17, 2015
It's quite far away. It takes about 3.5 - 4 hours from Kyoto to Yasugi (about 390 km). It will cost around 12,000 yen (one way). Take the Nozomi bullet train from Kyoto to Okayama (it's 3 stops). Then, transfer to the JR Express train "Yakumo", it's 7 stops to Yasugi.
They have a shuttle bus from the station. It's probably best to stay a few days in Shimane Pref., as there's lots to see: Izumo Grand Shrine, Lafcadio Hearn's museum, Matsue Castle as well as many other shrines and temples.
