I spent 6 hours to go around the village and the former mining place. The village has 405 residents. The mining activities started from 1300s until 1900s.
If you just look into that statistics and then you go around the village, seeing the vacant houses and temples, the small school there, you may be very likely to think that the village is dying. But if you look closer, it is a totally different picture. People are moving to the village to start their lives there, the population is increasing, the school is working, the vacant houses are being renovated and start to be occupied again. The community sticks together. Everyone knows each other in the village. They care about each other…
Coming to the village is a good choice to learn to see things in a different ways. Thank you, my guides.
If I have the second chance to come here, I would still go to the place to visit some bar here : )

I visited the Iwami-Ginzan Silver Mine World Heritage Center before I went to a hiking trip around the area of the mines (which is really large!).
I really recommend to visit this center before visiting any mines or cities in this area, because you get informed about everything important referring to history, past and future of the mines. I was really surprised and amazed by all the things I learnt in that museum. Now I also understand why the Iwami Silver Mine became World Heritage.
The museum provides all information in English. You can get a paper folder or an tablet PC, which you use while going through the exhibition.
The exhibiton space is modern, and everything is arranged in an enjoyable way. It is also really funny and interesting for children.

This is a great place to start the visit to silver mines, as it gives a good introduction and context. English signs are limited, but staff gave me an iPad with English explanations for everything shown there.

It is the first stop at the area before the Omori town itself, which is some distance away. You can connect to the town by local bus, or take a walk through a lightly forested area with a clear walking path. The staff here will provide a map in English to show you the way.

A special mention of the staff here must be made. They are simply the most hospitable and welcoming of any Japanese tour spot I have been; even in a land known for its hospitality and for being welcoming. i received extraordinary kindness from them when I was there. After visiting the museum, I wanted to walk towards the old mine shafts area, and one of the staff ran after me and offered me an umbrella as it was drizzling then.

Following the visit to the mines and the old town, I went back to the heritage centre to return the umbrella. Then I stood outside waiting for the bus. One of the staff came out for me with an umbrella, as the bus stop was not under shelter. She wanted to peel off the centre's label on the umbrella so she could give it to me. I politely rejected it and indicated that I could run to the bus when it came. But the kindness of the gesture was deeply appreciated.

Later, when the bus came, because I was not standing at the bus stop, it almost turned away. Just as I started to panic-run after it, another staff ran all the way out of the building, in the rather heavy rain, to stop the bus for me. Apparently, they have been helping me watch for the bus all along.

Such kindness, warmth and hospitality had made the trip to this area more than just about visiting the wonderful sites.

The Iwami-Ginzan Silver Mine World Heritage Center provides detailed historical and scientific information about the Iwami-Ginzan mine, which gives you a more thorough understanding of the significance of the mine in Japanese history. There are Ipads and folders containing the English explanations of the exhibits in English, so I recommend coming here before heading for the Mine Tunnel!

Before embarking down the Ryugenji Mabu Mine Tunnel, stop by the Iwami-Gizan Silver Mine World Heritage Center. Here, you will gain extensive knowledge of the Mines and the brave men, women, and children working in and out of the mines. The center gives the history and importance of the mines. One may also learn about the work environment and struggles workers encountered while in the mine tunnels. Learn about the technology and methods they used down in the mines and appreciate the work they did. It is a great learning experience.

We went to the silver mining area as there was a recommendation in the lonely planet guidebook. The area is not as touristy as the big cities but they have a lot of handy features vor foreign tourists. The english map can be obtained in the tourist information in odashi or in omori, people are super friendly in both places! The area is beautiful, little village with old houses and so much green forest. Pittoresque! The mines are impressive, you can walk through an old mining shaft and the raffinery rouins are amazing as well. There is a little german bakery in omori which is called "Hidaka" where we got some prezels and german bread. All in all it was an amazing day trip and we really enjoyed it.

You should learn what you will see in the World Heritage site. Otherwise, you maybe lost or cannot understand what you are seeing, I'm afraid.

They have good info regarding the area, history, and how to enjoy that.
They also offer experience to create silver accessories.

As expected, it was a World Heritage site. I think it's best to stop by here before visiting the Omori area and get information on the history of the silver mine. I recommend it. It costs money, but it was designed to give you a good understanding of Iwami Ginzan.

I went because it was supposed to start at 8:30, but the exhibition area started at 9:00. The staff was kind and helped me to make a chogin keychain by pouring metal into a mold. It's great to make something yourself. The exhibition area wasn't that big, but I was able to easily get to Omori Street by taking the bus in front of the facility.
