Absolutely fantastic
Amazing and stunning French Chateau from the 12th century and in the same family for 800 years
The current owner - Raoul de Ternay was our host and guide
An exceptional tour with a truly dedicated guide
Finished off with some delicious local wine tasting
One of the best tours I’ve been on
Highly Recommended

Our river cruise tour brought us here for a private wine tasting with the owner of the Chateau. He had us try 3 different wines. We liked one enough to purchase a bottle.

Dating to the 12th century, we were able to tour this historic estate as a part of our Canal Cruise on the Grand Victoria. In fact we were honored to have our tour led by the current Count de Rully who graciously shared a bit of the property and who can trace his lineage back to the 1100's-something like 46 generations.

The Château began with a tall keep then gradually expanded to include the 4 towers and double courtyard. The property contains more than 40 rooms including 20 bedrooms. Only a part of the property can be toured including the grand hall, original kitchen, family chapel, billiards room, boudoir and a few bedrooms but it is a interesting glimpse in the history of the family and the area. Our tour was special but there are tours for the public in July and August when historic properties like this are open (by law) to the general public.

This was a unique experience and certainly worth it. The count was a gracious host; the luncheon was delicious; and the wine terrific. Too bad we can't get the wine in the states. If I knew that, I would have bought some there and packed it (carefully) in my suitcase. It's amazing that the family has been able to keep the chateau for all these generations.

Visits around the castle interior only with guided groups €8 per person. No wine tasting on site without prior arrangement with owner. For tastings of wine grown around the chateau go to Antonin Rodet in Mercurey. The castle is beautifully situated and very photogenic.

Close to Chalon sur Saone, this was a good location to break a return trip back from Cannes, but we were sceptical after seeing another chateau where the accommodation offered was in an outbuilding - nothing of the sort here, with a vast and well-appointed suite, representing tasteful introduction of 21st century tech without detracting from the charm and splendour of the magnificent original building. Friendly hosts enhanced the experience with a sumptuous breakfast. Not to be missed!

This 800 year old castle has survived from the Middle Ages. In addition, dozens of family portraits are displayed taking one through centuries of dress/hair/style. I found the art fascinating as well as the stories of their survival. The family still owns and inhabits this chateau. It is not a Villandry, so I don't advise driving far out of your way to see. However, if you are wine tasting, enjoying the area nearby, and like to see the progression of a chateau through the years, this is an interesting stop.

This tour was set up through Uniworld as an extra on our cruise and well worth the extra money. The bus trip out to the property was beautiful. The time spent on the property included a cellar wines tasting, fabulous lunch with wine in the carriage house and a tour of the chateau with commentary by the owner. He is a very unaffected count who proudly discussed his family's property which they have owned since the 12 th century. Truly a memorable experience including seeing his sons' toy trucks in the courtyard.

We were part of a group that toured Chateau de Rully in October, 2014. The castle, itself, needs maintenance, which, I suppose, is why the count gives tours of the castle.

Shortly after we arrived, we met the count and he took us into the cave for wine tasting. The wine was very good and the experience of doing a tasting in the cave below the castle was nice.

After the tasting, we had lunch in the old stable. The lunch was beef bourguignon and potatoes au gratin. Both were good. Beef bourguignon is usually made with tough cuts of beef but cooked for a long time to tenderize it.

After lunch, the count gave us a tour of the lower rooms of the castle. After that, we had a chance to wander around the grounds of the castle. I'll include some pictures of our visit.

All-in-all, it was a good, unusual visit. If you have a chance to participate in a tour and lunch, I'd recommend it.
