You should hire a guide in order to learn the stories behind all that you will see. There are usually several hanging out near the entrance. The buildings with their intricate stonework patterns are remarkably intact with traces of the centuries old paintings also still visible. This archeological site exceeded my expectations for it.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten January 25, 2024

Whilst a guide might be ideal, we found that the Lonely Plantet gave us a good description. The ruins itself are very interesting and they are better preserved, needing less restoration than Monte Alban To us it makes sense to combine the visit with seeing Hierve del Agua, Yagul, Dainzu and El Tule which you can easily do by hiring a car for the day in Oaxaca.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten February 23, 2024
- Alfonso C16 contributionsA mixture of Art and ArcheologyThere is a lot to do in the area of Mitla and the ruins are unique and beautiful. We hired a taxi driver from Oaxaca and spent the day visiting Hierve el agua, el arbol del Tule and Mitla. The area can get busy but in my opinion it's worth it. The geometric patterns (grecas) seem so modern. You can do the whole thing in less than two hours.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten March 16, 2024

What a terrible place. Not much to see or do. Just a lot of useless sales stands and one of the worst UNESCO sites ever. Because of covid, this open air site is only open from 11am to 1pm and only allows 400 people a day, which is a total joke. There are no proper signs or labels, so you're forces to go with a guide. Do not find here!

We came here by colectivo from Oaxaca which was an adventure in itself. A wonderful shop lady explained where to catch it on the way back - not where we were dropped off. Mitla is a pleasant little town and it's not a very long walk from the center to the ruins. We stopped along the way at Casa Zapoteca to have a bite for brunch. The ruins, while not large like Monte Alban, have extensive well-preserved brick mosaics, some with traces of paint remaining. There are a couple of places you can climb down inside and if you climb the very high steps inside the last courtyard you will be rewarded with being able to visit rooms with recreated roofs and more brick mosaics. The site is well maintained with cactus gardens and places to sit. You might want to download a map and explanations before you go, because signage is scarce. We had some wonderful ice cream right outside the entrance and the stalls there were pleasant places to shop.

The area of the ruins is very small that you can visit in 1h maximum, not well organized, we have to wait for someone to open a gate to visit the second area, the 2 tombs were closed we cannot enter. The 85 pesos ticket is absolutely not value, very very expensive especially when you compare the 80 pesos ticket to the ruins of Monte Alban but absolutely worth it. For me Mitla is not a must for the ruins, but the city is nice. The low rating is mostly for the price.

It seems the site is closed Mon- Tue. Our guide should have known about it but didn't say so .Sometimes it is closed on other days - you can get a glimpse of the designs. Difficult to fully understand what we may have missed and would have to see You Tube and other videos. We were at the archaelogical site so we can understand and visualize the place better now.

On any particular day, a trip into the Valley of Oaxaca can combine several stops or attractions. I have always traveled to Mitla on a Sunday so I could include a stop at the weekly market in Tlacolula (coming or going, it doesn't really matter). On the Periferico highway near the 2nd class bus terminal, it's easy enough to catch a bus heading to Mitla. The 24 mile trip will take about 45 minutes to Tlacolula or stay on the additional 7 miles to Mitla. The town of Mitla is very pleasant. From the bus stop, it's a short mile walk through town where one passes shops selling local handicrafts and mezcal. Admission to the archeological site is $43MEX (free for nationals on Sundays). Don't compare it to Monte Alban. This was a more minor site later in Zapotec history. Nonetheless, one sees many excellent examples of Zapotec designs on the walls of the central palace area. The local church is built literally amidst the ancient ruins. With its three red domes, this church is as lovely as any you will see in Mexico. From the ruins, the view of the church is magnificent. Either walk back to the highway or take one of the 3-wheeled tuc-tucs. If you didn't stop on the way out, plan to visit the Tlacolula market on the way back. This Sunday market gives you all the flavor of any Mexican market as it revels in activity. The entire length of the main street is filled with vendors. At the top of the street you'll find the covered market area where you can sit at one of a nearly endless number of eateries most of them specializing in barbacoa - stewed goat. Order a steaming bowl of barbacoa en consomme for a most satisfying meal. Like so many things in the Oaxacan Valley, you can do these day trips on your own for next to no cost and with the assurance you'll be safe. Get out there and explore!

I took a second bus transport to Tule (just wanted to see Tule village before leave Oaxaca), and then a taxi to Mitla village. The sun was really warm during the day in Mitla and water came into my mind every 15 min.
I didn't vent inside the museum area that day, because I felt the village outlook was attractive to me.
After spent one and half hours I bought myself mineral water and sandwiches and walked down to the main road. I was waiting until the next colectivo truck caravan picked up travellers for a long, long drive towards Hierve el Agua.
The ride up in the mountain, far away from civilization, took about 70 min but it was worth all the pain in backside. However. The panoramic view was fantastic and I spent the rest of the day in heaven :)

Hola..
