My wife and I took a bike tour through these old. abandoned mines and were impressed with how well they have been preserved. The old smelting towers are impressive and the trails go on for miles.

First you have to find this place which is at the end of a dusty trail about 2 miles from the main road. You should pay 50 pesos per person if the caretakers find you poking about. Go to the rear of the red newer looking Chapel to start your self guided walkng tour. You'll get some great photos and see the actual mines which were once the most productive in Mexico

We decided to come here as it is the emblematic symbol to the town. We were driving a dodge neon and rainy season here had just begun. We followed the way google maps showed to get here and had the car get stuck in the mud 400 meters from the destination. There is a secon route that we were told was even worse. If going in months of rainy season go in a high clearance car and 4 by 4. We were lucky to find a local boy that had a shovel and helped us to get the car out of the mud taking us more than an hour. No one come by and there are absolutely
No people here on the weekdays. The ruins themselves are beautiful and the arquitectura very pretty but it was an Odessy just to get here.

Access is quite expensive ($80 per person and since it is private property it can vary at any time), considering that it does not have any service, there is no information (brochure or brochure) since the person who charges the fee only has a printout as a poster. "entrance" where it mentions the "attractions" and suggests the route. There are only five attractions: the hull of the hacienda that can only be "seen" from the outside, the ceremonial center in the courtyard of the hacienda itself, the Jesuit ovens (fenced with barbed wire), the magical arches and the of machines. You can only access these last two and it must be on your own since there is no one who can "give you a tour of the place." It is quite neglected and the worst thing is that use is made (at least in one) of the mine openings to deposit garbage. I don't know if it is the person in charge of the place or a family settled in front of the furnaces. I was able to observe that there are even up to coolers, and is located approximately halfway between the ovens and the center of the hacienda. Recommended only if you have never visited the place and can do so before it is further destroyed since, for example, many of the arches are already "cracked" and they are one of the two attractions that can be accessed. I hope that for all the history that is kept in the ruins that still remain, some authority can intervene for its conservation (INAH) since it is obvious that absolutely nothing has been done in many years, let alone to improve, but only to preserve what still remains in that place.

When searching for "Mineral of Wells" in Google the photos that appear first are those of the Jesuit Furnaces in Santa Brígida, however after having spent a weekend in the town I can assure that this hacienda is the most overrated.

Upon arrival you are charged $80 MXN per person to let you pass, but there is no Guide to accompany you or Explanatory Brochures, you just walk on your own. The place is sloppy and the Ovens are much smaller than they look in the pictures, they are just small stone cones, nothing out of the ordinary.

Use your time to get to know other mines like "5 Señores", "Centenario", "El Triángulo", where if you can enter inside a mine, not like in Santa Brígida that there is nothing to see.

If access cost about $20 MXN it would be worth it.

We selected Santa Brigida and its Los Hornos (cone shaped smelting ovens) as the one hacienda to visit, and were not disappointed. We even got a tour of the inside of the main house (do not think generally open to the public). Recommended.

You need a guide to take you since walking by yourself could be incredibly dangerous. There's open mine shafts and an entire tunnel that has collapsed.
The guide also said it's haunted by the miners that drowned when the mines flooded. Learning the history is pretty interesting though.

If you want to have a good idea of how colonial Mexico used to look, don't miss Mineral de Pozos and Santa Brígida. Here you'll be able to see some of the most amazing architectural feats for the mining industry of that time. From huge furnaces to an amazing hallway that harnessed wind. Beautiful! Don't forget the sunscreen.

Food at the hotels was overpriced and they want to charge a 4% fee everywhere you go if you want to pay with a credit or debit card so bring cash. The stores at the Jardin will tell you anything to sell you something. For example, I asked if the clothing was cotton and made in Mexico, owner said yes but the tag said polyester and made in China (this has been my experience in much of Mexico). Ask for proof if these things are important to you.

I was totally enamoured with this old hacienda. About an hour by car from SMA, it's a great day trip full of fascinating history and Instagram worthy photos for days.
