Enterprising people of Chettinad have created amazing village industries like this Athangudi Hand made tiles with red sand available in various designs! Athangudi Palace as can be seen with the local tiles is a typical Chettinad Palace, picturised in many Tamil Movies. One shd try to visit this most energetic village near Karaikudi without fail!

going to factories where cement tiles are being handmade is fascinating. I had no clues about the techniques. Loved it. You should give the head of workshop a 100 rps gratuity for showing you the process.

I usually don't like "factory tours", but this one is an exception. It's a small workshop, where very talented craftsmen make tiles right in front of you. While staying at Chidambara Vilas, we decided to tour the surrounding area. Thus we visited Athangudi Tiles factory. I have seen many videos of these tiles and their history. So visiting the place was very exciting. They have a resident guide to explain the process. The visit will only take about 1 hour.

It was great to witness the process of hand painted tile making at Ganapathy Tiles. They are beautiful, cheap (at Rs.20/- per tile when ordered in bulk) and artistic. Pay the artisans a small tip for their demo and dont forget to take a tile or two as a souvenir.
