Downton Abbey fans will recognize this small village located just southwest of Oxford. All of the village scenes for the Downton Abbey series were filmed here - the "hospital" in the Downton series is actually the village library. Bampton has several small local inns / pubs for accomodation and places to eat. Bampton is an absolute "must see" for anyone who is a fan of Downton Abbey. Renting a car is just about the only way to visit Bampton, but I'm sure there will be coach tours coming soon??

If you are a real Downton Abbey fan, print out the driving tour guide on line as we did, and drive around the town looking for familiar landmarks. Since we are not devoted fans, all we could say is that the sights in Bampton could have existed in the late 19th and early 20th century. We were disappointed that there was no real center of activity or tourist office that we could see. We did eat lunch in the Bampton Cafe, which was fine, but again nothing that would have led you to believe that so much filming had been done here.

I visited bampton library yesterday as part of a downton abbey bus tour from Ireland. We visited the church in bampton and also the library where there were two lovely ladies and a man I think called David who told us lovely stories about the filming of downton abbey. It was a pleasurable experience and they had lovely gifts associated with the tv series and lovely books which I did purchase. Would definitely visit this lovely quaint village and library again.

I must confess I only visited the library as part of my Quest to visit hotspots from the fictional show, Downton Abbey, but WOW Iam glad I did !
The library is small but adequate.
The gift shop is amazing! Lots of unique one off local items plus a large amount of Downton Abbey merchandise like its own published books on Bampton and Downton Abbey which has two volumes for £5 each !!
Includes lots of photographs from when the cast were filming in Bampton
Also has merchandise mugs, pens and gift cards
The staff in this library were so friendly and helpful! They were very obliging in helping me take a photograph outside their famous front door
The staff are also marketing geniuses in my opinion! With their new "The Downton Mile"
They hope to collect enough pound coins from people to line them all up around the village in a mile long pound coin conga! Brilliant how they have incorporated Downton abbey to fundraise for their library! I think that's a stroke of genius if I must say so myself!
Excellent visit if you are in Bampton

Friendly, knowledgeable staff, who really make you welcome. Not the largest library in the wirld, clearly, but the star in Bampton's crown none the less. Excellent displays too. Worth popping in if you are in the area.

We stayed in Brampton with friends and were excited that many Downton Abbey scenes were filmed here and did our little tour and visited the library and small exhibition. What we did not know was that Bampton is the home of Morris dancing and you can watch them practice in the village pub. Stunning village , friendly people and close to lots of local pubs.

We were wandering this cute town still unseemingly touched by tourism and found this library (near the church) that was used as the hospital in Downton Abbey. It was closed that evening so we went back the next morning hoping for some more insight into the show. The librarian was there in the art gallery section of the library ( I think the book section opened later) and in the corner was a little card table with some Downton Abbey knick knacks on it. The librarian was super nice and spent some time telling us about Downton Abbey and where they filmed the scenes in the town.

Bampton is the village used when filming the TV series Downton Abbey. It is interesting to see the village green in real life although it looks much smaller than in the series. You can also visit Saint Mary’s church and of course the library which has loads of Downton Abbey souvenirs.

A very happy small local library with all the facilities of a larger library. Very helpful staff who go out of their way to help.
