- anniejaypBath, United Kingdom8 contributionsExcellent - we learnt loads!Excellent museum - very interesting and informative with lots of facinating historical exhibits and stories of the port trading. We learnt loads and spent 2 hours there even though it's a relatively small museum! The photography exhibition was great and the staff were very friendly and helpful oo. We strongly recommend this place.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten May 29, 2024
- JumboJetJohnnyMelbourne, Australia647 contributionsWorth a Visit. If you are visiting the numerous wineries around Regua, a trip to the Museo do Douro will provide you with interesting history and valuable insights into how the famous Port wines are produced. When we visited the museum, there were 2 additional art exhibitions included in the admission price. We spent a little over an hour wandering around, then went out into a garden area that had views over the river to enjoy a complimentary wine tasting. Definitely worth a visit.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 3, 2024
- Jean NWorcester, United Kingdom256 contributionsInteresting museumWell laid out museum with some interesting exhibits. I would have liked a bit more and the way the text was laid out was a bit irritating as it could be difficult to read in the dim lighting. But overall a nice place to visit and my daughter thought it was really good.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten August 9, 2024

Simple but interesting exhibits explained the life-sryle, the tools and techniques for terracing, planting, ctivatinh, and making the wine, and much more. The museum has a space outdoors where you can sample the wine for free. Definitely worth an hour or two's visit.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten September 26, 2024

Informative museum gave a great overview of the Douro River and how tough life is for those who live and work there. Our tour guide was very good, but there were two other groups in close proximity to us and it made hearing her difficult. The exhibits included maps, descriptions of the various areas along the river, tools used to harvest the grapes, artwork from local artists, and dramatic re-telling of catastrophes that have occurred over time. It was the end of the day and the museum was very warm and felt as though the air conditioning had been turned off. If there had been fewer people inside at the same time, it would have been a better experience.

The museum was actually very interesting and a cool respite on a very hot day. Sadly the visit was spoilt by incredibly rude staff. A glass of port wine was included after the visit at the 'cafe' but mistakenly we made our way to the restaurant, and we were not the only ones to do so. As the restaurant was looking very closed we wandered off to find the cafe but first I thought I'd use the toilet facilities. Whilst actually in the toilet cubicle someone started banging loudly on the door, shouting. I exited very quickly thinking there was a fire or something, to be confronted by a young lady shouting at me. 'How dare I use the toilet facilities without eating in the restaurant'. Apparently, they were not for use for the museum visitors! I apologised profusely and made a hasty exit feeling embarrassed and upset. By this time another young lady had joined her and both seemed very amused, laughing at my distress. My bemused husband, who was waiting for me, pointed out that I had done nothing wrong as the WC sign that I had followed did not indicate it was for restaurant use only. I went back and told them they should be ashamed of themselves for treating visitors in this way but I don't think they were very repentant.
So, management if you are reading this, please train your staff in customer service and put up some proper signage. The date we visited was 16.07.22

A great museum in a former warehouse showing the history of port wine making, with numerous fascinating artefacts. It showed the back-breaking work in the vineyards and the treacherous transportation of the barrels of port down the Douro River to Porto before the river was 'tamed.'
We had an excellent guide showing us round. All exhibits have descriptions in Portuguese and English.

Booked 7 pm evening meal after good reviews but limited museum experience.
Rotten poorly heated afternoon fish dish, tough as nails presented as fresh meal, despite challenging. Lied repeatedly despite me telling them I’m experienced cook. Avoid if not Portuguese as just passing off tough reheated poorly cooked left overs. The security guard got lovely fresh free food but ours expensive and very poor.
My husband’s was entirely different but they just palmed off and wouldn’t take responsibility. I’m a cook snd this was pure ******. excuse summary!
So disappointed after reviews. Go to other local restaurants snd AVOID if not local or risk same discrimination

A must-visit place.
With lots of old pieces combined with modern digital media.
There is a restaurant, a bar with a terrace and a shop.
Located on the bank of the Douro River.
The terrace has a privileged view of the river.

Nice small museum which explains the history, geology and culture if thr Duoro region very well.
Can get busy, so pick your time to visit to avoid coach and boat parties. Nice gardens overlooking the River too. Glass of port with the visit was interesting. The town feels more authentic, than touristy. Explore the bars and restaurants there if you have time.

Yes, multiple elevators to every level from the street.

How does one visit the vineyards themselves? I've heard that each producer in the Duoro doesn't really have a structure that provides tastings and introductions.
Written June 24, 2015
Some Quintas are open for tours and tastings and some are not. Most require a reservation and if you have language requirements, English for example, those tours are only offered at certain times of the day.
I hired a local guide who arranged the tours for me and drove me to them and then back to my hotel in the area. We were able to visit up to 3 Quintas a day and have lunch as well.
You can try to research and make the reservations yourself, but I found hiring a guide was well worth the money.
