Visited Serbia this summer with my family and had the opportunity to visit Easter Bosnia Republic Srpska with a family friend of mine. We rented a vehicle in Novi Sad, Serbia. One of the places I wanted to visit was the famous bridge built by the order of Grand Vizer Mehmet Pasha Sokolovic in the 16 th century. Mehmet Pasha was a lad born to Orthodox Christian parents and taken by Ottoman Turks as blood tribute and raised in Istambul to become Grand Vizier to three Sultans. The bridge is a magnificent example of Ottoman arcitecture in its exsistance. I would highly recommend a visit to this site to anyone interested in history. I would also recommend reading the book by Ivo Andric, The Bridge On The Drina before the visit !

This is the bridge at the centre of Ivo Andric's great novel "The Bridge on the Drina", for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize. To my mind it is just as elegant as the better known bridge at Mostar, and infinitely more peaceful and pleasurable to visit. It was built by Sinan, said to have been the greatest architect in the Ottoman Empire, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The view from the monumental stone in the centre up and down the river Drina, winding between low green hills, is wonderful.
Nearby there's a cafeteria, where you can sit and have a coffee or an ice-cream by the river, and an excellent English speaking tourist office (tel +387 58 620 950), who will have information on any forthcoming concerts, etc (sometimes held actually on the bridge), and will be able to help with accommodation.
(For more on the town, search TA for "Visegrad Vacations" or google "Visegrad tourism".)

On the way from Sarajevo going to Drina , the view is so wonderful . Green river , mountains and zigzag trails amazes me while we were driving there . Count the tunnels and you will sum up to 45 before you reach the Drina . It was really worth the trip . The bridge is so beautiful

A nice bridge in a lovely town. But visitors don't seem to know it's the site of shocking massacres throughout 1992, when Bosniak men, women and children were killed on the Drina river bridge and their bodies were dumped into the river. You can find more information on Wikipedia and other sources.

Before travelling to visegrad I read ivo andrics book 'the bridge on the drina'. We travelled by car from montenegro. Found accommodation at the main hotel with views of the bridge from our room. It was amazing to be looking at this rich in history bridge from our hotel room. There were a lovely lady on the bridge that gave a history lesson about the bridge (in English). We travelled with three young kids and a pram. The kids were amazed by the bridge too. Make sure to also visit andric grad which is close walking distance from the bridge.

Beautiful bridge that withstood the test of time. The bridge over river Drina beautifully portrayed by a Nobel prize winner Ivo Andrić.

If you are visiting Bosnia, you have to see Mehmed Pasha Bridge in Visegrad!
It became worldwide known thanks to Ivo Andric, a Bosnian novelist, who has written the novel „Bridge over Drina“ and got a Nobel prize for it.
Ivo Andric and his book remains the most translated book and author in general from these parts of the world.
The bridge over Drina is a magnificent work of art spanning the river with 11 large arch and several smaller ones. It is one out of the total number of three UNESCO heritage bridge monuments around the world - of which two are in Bosnia and Herzegovina!
Take a drive with the old Steam engine train - popularly called Čiro, and enjoy some of the breathtaking views!
On your way to Visegrad be sure to make a photo stop in one of the most serene places in the country – the Romanija mt plateau.
If we are lucky we might see some of Bosnian mountain wild horses on the way to and back from Visegrad.

I tried to go to Visegrad from Sarajevo for one-day trip, but there's no bus for return. I wonder if it would be easier to arrive Visegrad from Serbia, maybe?

hello from Athens
i travelled to Visegrad last January from Drvegrad/Mokra Gora, the distance is less than 2 hours
i dont know about Sarajevo road
but as the distance from Belgrade to the place i lived (Drvegrad) is about 3 hours, i think it is easier to reach Visegrad
