Ir. D.F. Wouda Steam Pumping Station The D.F. Woudagemaal in the town of Lemmer is the world's largest steam pumping station still in working condition. The pumping station was opened in 1920 by Queen Wilhelmina for the purpose of pumping excess water from Friesland into the Zuyder Zee, the present-day IJsselmeer. The imposing brick building is austere and functional, in line with the architectural style of the Amsterdam School. In 1966, the electrically driven J.L. Hoogland pumping station in Stavoren took over the task of the steam pumping station in Lemmer. And yet, even today, the historic D.F. Woudagemaal plays a crucial role in extreme conditions. In cases of extremely high water, the old steam pumping station is deployed to drain excess water into the IJsselmeer as quickly as possible. The D.F. Woudagemaal has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1998.

Arrived late in the afternoon and found an English speaking docent who gave me an amazing tour around the still active steam pumping station that keeps Friesland dry in the winter and wet in the summer..worth a visit.

The Woudagemaal inaugurated in 1920 is the largest steam pumping station in the world among those still working. The museum (recently built) offers numerous panels and interactive machinery regarding the functioning of the water level regulation in Friesland (fun and interesting for children and adults)....More

Lovely place to walk around (especially on a rainy day) Very informative guides will explain the steam engines that move the water. You can walk amongst all the machinery. Sweet cafe with a view too.

I visited the Woudagemaal twice and it is for sure interesting to find out that this 'gemaal' is still important to the waterlevel in Friesland. Amazing that this build so many years ago and still works and even still is as already mentioned very important....More

A nice and informative museum in a modern environment. Afterwards a tour through the pump station with an interesting guide. Nice station to visit on a not so nice day with rain and wind.
