Go when kids are in school.
The actual site should get 5 stars as it is an interesting building with a real sense of history. Had to give our visit 3 starts as it was spoilt by a family treating it as a fun park with children and adults running around and barging past anyone in their way. Juste every room or area you went they would be pushed out of the way by screaming kids and adults. You could tell that other visitors were also less than impressed judging by their faces! I doubt if the staff realised as the shop and ticket office was away from the entrance so some people just walked in, looked around and left which seems a daft arrangement.

    Well worth a visit.
A lovely place made even better by the gentleman looking after it. He explained its history and answered all our questions. We were there on the morning of 27th September and sat in the sun, having a coffee soaking in the atmosphere. It is amazing to think there were people living there still in 1966!

Disappointing experience due to limited number of information panels
In my view, the photos of Aydon Castle on the English Heritage website are deceptive. In reality, the castle and its immediate surroundings are not that large. Of the many English Heritage sites that we visited during our trip to the UK, this castle stands out as a disappointment. Panels with historical information are few in number. I would encourage English Heritage to upgrade the information available at this site. If that's not possible, Northumberland has many other attractions more worthy of a visitor's time.

    Aydon castle review
We visited Aydon Castle on Friday. We had prebooked and paid for our tickets online in the morning before we left the house. Aydon castle is in the middle of countryside which is stunning. However when we arrived to find we also had to pay for parking a was a little annoyed as we didn’t have any change in us and the machine wasn’t accepting card payments. We walked up to the castle from the carpark. We knew it was going to be quiet as there was only one other car in the carpark. The lady let us pay for the carpark on our card once we got up to the castle. She was a lovely friendly lady and gave us some information about best routes around the castle, making sure we didn’t miss the back of the castle and the bluebells that had just recently came out, where we may possibly see some kestrals etc. I’m always a bit disappointed with English heritage places. I always think they are overpriced and that they could do a lot more with the places rather than leaving them as an empty shell. The castle was beautiful and I think they could help bring it back to life a little bit to attract more people.

    Happy times at Aydon
What a lovely and interesting place! Farmhouse, fortified manor house, castle ... and surrounded by wonderful countryside and walks. The member of staff on the reception desk was also friendly, helpful and informative. This site would make a good spot for a historical re-enactment event. We had a great time here and recommend it to others.

Small but perfectly formed this is a great find and an interesting castle to explore. Lovely staff. Dogs allowed throughout which was great. Really recommend.

It looks like a later period fortified Manor house but in fact dates from the 13th century just with alterations and additions over the centuries. Internally it has retained its medieval character. Large open rooms, wooden beams, fireplaces, archways, it somehow just evoked history in a way other structures of the same period don't.

An absolutely fantastic find. I stumbled across here by accident during my holiday in Northumberland. I love exploring castles and ruins and this place didn't disappoint. Luckily I got there quite early and pretty much had the place to myself before any families arrived and spoiled the atmosphere. There seems to have been some restoration work started, whether this is to completely restore the building or just some of the rooms - I don't know, but the efforts so far are paying off. Lots of rooms and areas to check out and there is a lovely little garden/orchard to the side. The Castle is slightly reminiscent of Stokesay Castle, although there are more rooms here.

Another reviewer was complaining that it isn't a castle! perhaps if they had taken the time to look around and indulge in a bit of education, they would have known that it WAS a castle, that has undergone a far bit of adding to over time.

To get here you have to navigate some very narrow roads/tracks, so watch out for animals and tractors.

Note: Parking is VERY limited. You have to park down a lane a couple of minutes walk from the castle. There is some disabled parking next to the entrance.
