One of the highlights of our trip. We were able to walk around the mine. Lots of useful information from the guide who was an actual engineer at the mine.

Unbelievable experience! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity! To see a working diamond mine is simply wonderful. Make sure you are in good physical shape! You will appreciate the hard working men and women that operate the mine. See where all the world’s gems originate!

Excellent tour

We bought the HYperli voucher with Diamond Tours. We had Kobus as a guide and he was brilliant. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Very informative.

Cullinan surface tour

You can feel proud that you touched the replica of the world's biggest diamond found in the same place. Other than that the surface tour is okay for one time but they won't take you close to the shaft or the mine. Just okay to get a tour and get little bit knowledge, but make sure you are comfortable to walk in the tour more than 2 kms.

Underground tour:- Nothing to see here!

Despite the best efforts of Lee, our tour guide, this tour was a disappointment. Luckily I had only paid the walk-in cost, R600, not the exorbitant price charged by Tour operators, so a cheaper "been there done that" tick in the box, not to be recommended.

Direct communication - poor

Tour:- Defaults to book for TWO people.
Does not go to an actual working mine.
Long walk down a muddy tunnel and back.

Tour guide Lee was informative and friendly.

Recommendation:-Do not go underground, maybe just do the surface tour or just look in the museum.

Initially I emailed the office and got a reply with times and cost, but no way to book. Replied asking how to book and never got a reply.
I tried to book direct on the web-site but I could not get a ticket for ONE person, it always wanted to book for at least two and you get a "voucher" which is valid for three years!
Tried to ring the office direct, no answer on three different days\times.
So basically booked and Airbnb literally up the road for the night before and walked down to the "booking Office" the following day.
Underground tours are Monday, Wed and Saturday at 10:00 Minimum two people on the tour, no maximum as I could see. Our tour was 7 people in total.
I turned up at 08:30 and luckily someone was there to take payment and book me on the tour. She did not seem too keen at first as I was alone.

Tour starts at 10:00, Lee, an ex miner of 30 + years was informative and helpful. He would NOT let us take our own cameras underground, saying other guides were breaking rules to do so. However there was nothing or note to take photos of anyway!
He took a few photos and then emailed the results a few days later.

After Health and safely briefing and getting kitted up in overalls, boots etc we walked to the mine, about 10 minutes in uncomfortable boots!

Finally got down in the cage at 12 noon, seems to be the standard time tours go down.
Then a long walk through muddy boring tunnels.
You are not actually going anywhere near the working mine , that is on a lower level.
The "mine" you are waling down is disused so you see scrap metal and old abandoned equipment.
Lee gave a commentary of the mine working, his experience and answered questions, but this was a long boring walk. At the end of the walk, you see and old disused drilling rig. Then you turn around and walk back the same boring way.

Once at the cage to go back up, you could be in for a long wait. Lee said it was not unusual to be waiting for up to an hour as priority is given to the workers, not tourists (fair enough). We were lucky and only waited 10 minutes. We were then crammed into the cage along with 50 other workers. Cosy!
At the surface Lee took us to the actual "mine" excavation for pictures (attached) and some explanation of the surface works-again mostly abandoned, rusting buildings and equipment. We eventually got back in the starting office (also the museum) by 14:30.
The museum was for more informative than the tour and is R5 to enter( IIRC)

Overall a disappointing visit that took about 6 hrs from start to finish from the Office.

The little town is preserved like in the years past.
Try to stay away on the weekend, the place is full of bikers and there is one extremely loud restaurant.

The museum tour at the mine is very well done and interesting.

Definitely worth a visit.

Fascinating Tour

Only confirmed a few weeks before we left the UK that this long planned tour would be running, having been suspended throughout the Covid pandemic. Met up with retired miner Lee for the tour. Fully kitted out from head to toe, given safety pack and briefing lecture, then taken deep underground to the inactive section for a full on experience. Learned a great deal. Lengthy walking but only as expected. Went over to the open cast section for a viewing after we'd emerged. No photos allowed down below but Lee took some good ones and emailed them. A highly commendable tour.

Unbelievable tour

I have never had a more in-depth tour of anything. the tour guide was a 40 year veteran of this dimond mine. after taking an elevator deep into the earth we walked at least 2 kilometers through the mine. We saw every aspect of the mine operation as it was happening. We were out fitted with the same gear used by the miners. we walked through dark, muddy passageways, and pressed against the sides of the mine shaft while heavy equipment move past.

This store is not for the unfit. Be ready to carry equipment, and walk for hours. Also I would say this tour is not for the claustrophobic.

Above ground tour

Initially wanted to do the four hour underground tour but given that it is not operating we ended up doing the above ground tour (two hours). The above ground tour was excellent and highly recommend you do the drive east of Pretoria/JNB to see the operations in full force. Learned so much about the diamond creation process and also the extraction process. Really informative and interesting!

Ok Tour, Lots of Walking!

Ok Tour, Lots of Walking! So right off the advertisements for this tour indicate bring your camera for awesome photographs. We were advised that no photos were allowed in the mine, the guide would take photos, we had to either place the cameras in a locker or in the car. This was a little scary since it was our first day in South Africa. The guide took 2 horrible photographs, luckily they were free.
