An hour outside Tokyo by train, Mt. Takao is popular among city dwellers for the views from its seven hiking trails. To enjoy the view without the work, take the cable car or chairlift to the top and visit the Takaosan Yakuoin Yuuki-ji Temple, founded in 744.

A nice mountain with great views on top. There are many little temples on your hike up. There might be a lot of people but that doesn't ruin it because you're still in nature. After your visit here, try going to Ukai Toriyama.

It was a clear sunny but crisp autumn day and Mt Takao beckoned. The autumn colours were in full swing and we started out from Takaosanguchi Station. We hadn't reckoned on it being a festival day and also being a Sunday it was very crowded....More

Spur of the moment decision. Day was clear and cool and we expected vibrant autumn colors. We weren’t disappointed. My son and I have climbed Fuji, my wife fondly remembers climbing a nearby Mt. with friends. It was an easy hike up well marked trails....More

We visited Mount Takao, as I needed a break from the city. You can easily do Takao itself as a day trip from Tokyo. It's about an hour on the private train line from Shinjuku station. We wanted to see Mount Fuji, but when we...More

Takao is just an hour from Shinjuku station on the Chuo line. Lovely place to visit for a nature walk and some local color. Autumn is a great time to go. Easy hiking and some lively activities most of the year.

You start off with some generic temples and a lot of casual hikers, but if you keep exploring the trails you can go on for what seems like forever and the trails can become very challenging if you press on past the summit to other...More

I'm living in Takao, so I have had the opportunity to hike all over Mt Takao this spring. The blossoms are worth the trip alone (in April), but it's worth coming any time. There are about 5 trails to the top from the main entrance....More

Hi. I know it can be done faster, but we've done the same trek three times and we took about 4 hours to climb trail #6 and descend on trail #1. That gave us left plenty of time to take photos along the way, grab a quick bite... More
