Harmonica Yokocho(alley) is THE best place to be for the most authentic local living in Tokyo. During the day, its a shopping area for clothings, groceries, meats, restaurants and more. But once it hits 5 pm, the entire place turns into the ultimate local nightlife. There are so many local hidden bars to check out. Ranging from standing bars, Thai bars, horse meat bar, Harmonica really sets you up with the variable bars to choose from. The people are super friendly and are generally welcoming to travelers. The only downside is that none of the bars offer English, So you’ll definitely need someone to show you around. I live here now and every person that I have brought here have loved it more then any other location in tokyo, even more then golden gai!!! You gotta come check this place out if you want the most authentic local nightlife around. Best thing about it, drinks can cost as cheap as 200 yen to 500 yen! AMAZING!

Many of the shops at Hamonika Yokocho opens late, many from about 5pm, but if you can hang in there until 5pm or so, it's a must go place - with many small eating places, many of them can seat only 6-10 people at a time, waiting times varies, so be prepared to wait. Hamonica Yokocho (alley) comprises of several alleys & exploring is part of the fun. Enjoy people!

Not only can you find unique home goodies, fresh vegetables and cakes, more superstitious friends can also go for fortune telling (probably not in fluent English, though). It’s all worth it to wake up early for a little walk through the retro Showa alleyways.

The area 1 minute walk North Exit of Kichijoji Station is this area known as "Harmonica Alley". It's called this because there about 100 or so lined up small shops in a small area and is likened to look like the mouthpiece of a harmonica. If you enjoy bar hopping, then this is a wonderful place to explore and meet the locals. Although when we visited, we didn't see many foreigners. This collection of alleyways houses little shops that sells hand crafted goods, clothing, sweets, and of course, izakayas and other food. We arrived in the afternoon and nothing was really opened yet but it came alive in the evenings.
It's nestled between large shopping building and arcades in the area. The adjacent covered arcade called Runroad is also packed with shops and restaurants. This area is easy to get to from most anywhere in Tokyo and expect to spend many hours in the area.

It was nice, albeit very small. It was smaller than Omoide Yokocho in Shinjuku, which is quite small. It is in a great location - right near the Sunroad Shopping District. I did enjoy scrolling through but it was not worth the detour on my trip.

Post-war Tokyo was a long slow rebuilding story, as the economy and living standards improved, and more people moved to "my-home in the suburbs" where cars became mandatory, sometimes leaving the old urban markets and Shoten-gai adrift, bereft of customers. But some have thrived as Kichijoji does, eschewing cars for train and bus transport. Right across from both JR and Keio rail stations and the main bus/taxi ranks, Hamonika (i.e. "harmonica") Yokocho, or side-alley, gives you a nifty taste of what it may have been like from the '50s onwards, though the black-market is no longer, there are still quirky cooking-ware shops and stand-up pubs.

Located close to Kichjoji station. Nice Yokocho loaded with a lot of nice eateries. I was there a little bit to early so much of the shops were still closed or preparing to open up but I can imagine that this area is a real hit during lunch and dinner hours.

This is a pleasant interlude to visit these markets on a Sunday morning in the little alleys just west of Sun Road and opposite Kichijoji Station. Lots happening in the streets hung with lanterns with stalls and food shops, yakitori sellers, snacks, crafts, knife sharpeners and enthusiastic vegetable sellers.

There are more than 80 shops and restaurants. The opening hour of each one varies, depending on each shop and restaurant. If you are looking for a nice Izakaya, you should go there after 5 pm.
