A small islet off the town of Santa Cruz, connected by a wooden bridge.
As you come off the bridge, there's a useful map showing the various parts of the island.
There are parts of a 16th century castle & its walls, originally built by General Diego das Mariñas to complete the defensive system of Coruña bay. It eventually became a country house belonging to the family of the writer Emilia Pardo Bazán. Today, it is overseen by the town hall & is used by CEIDA, an environmental organisation with a library & various rooms for meetings & exhibitions.
In the gardens we saw a significant display of boards depicting Alexander von Humboldt's life & travels, with QR codes & descriptions in English.
Certainly worth a walk around the island for its lovely views. The grounds seem to be open from 0900 to 1400 Monday to Friday & on Saturdays 1100 to 1400.

Lovely stroll along a beach to get access to the castle. With a low tide we saw the structure of the isle. Free access from the promenade. You can see a coast of A Coruña, beautiful nature around. With a high tide you could have a swim as the beach is nice and clean. Lots of paths to walk around. Highly recommend this area to visit.

This island was right across from our hotel ... Portocobo ... and it was just a short walk to get to the bridge to take us to the island where it was fun to walk around and take pictures .

I may be biased with this review because I grew up coming here and playing around the castle, bringing my old flings to make out and just typical teenage things but truthfully this is an amazing place. The Castle is well preserved and it has amazing views of The port of A Coruña . Santa Cruz may be a sleepy little town , but this area is a site to admire and show your loved ones.

In my opinion Oleiros is the best place to live and enjoy the nice weather. Impressive quality of live, very eco, perfect to discover by bike. Beaches are great with a fantastic view of Coruña.

Where have you found a beach with a small island and a castle? Not the best place to sightsee in the world but indeed a nice and original place. You can imagine pirates wandering around or soldiers preparing their cannons

Great little island accessed via a bridge over the tidal bay. There is a lovely walk round the island plus a surprising little garden at the top. Plentiful information boards are provided by the local community

Situated in the pretty Santa Cruz is Isla De Santa Cruz and Castle. Access is via a walkway with a good path around the small Island and views of the sea and Castle itself.
Santa Cruz itself is very popular at peak times and parking can be difficult. We arrived early and the Castle opened at 10.00am. We were able to take our dog across as well!
The Castle itself has some history and there are some installations in the grounds.

A place to go, to view, to contemplate. Where history meets modern life.
There are coffee houses, there is parking.
A close eye has to be kept on small children

Nice castle with an interesting history and in a nice setting. Not very big so only takes 30mins to see but it's free and worth a visit !
